Pattaya police to limit the scope of volunteer police

From the Pattaya Weekly:

Following thousands of complaints from Pattaya tourist as well as residents about farangs working "side-by-side" the Pattaya police, the Pattaya police has decided to terminate most policing activities by farangs.

 

The legendary mobile police station which has been present nightly near the entrance to Walking Street is to be closed effective today.

The makeshift police station has been a source of great conflict between the Pattaya police and tourists who have felt that the farang police continuously have overstepped their bounds.

 

Recently there has been reports where farang officers having exercised their powers in ways that were highly inappropriate.

This includes the use of pepper spray, tear gas and stun guns both when on duty and when off duty.

In a speech today at Pattaya town hall the chief police director khun Pornraten Chakrabongse publically apologized for all the confusion and public havoc that has been caused by the volunteer police and he assured the residents of Pattaya as well as the tourists that the volunteer police will no longer have the power previously afforted them.

In the speech khun Chakrabongse proceeded to state that any volunteer officer will be held retroactively accountable for any misconduct they may have the source of.

 

Khun Chakrabongse stated that the members of the volunteer police force will still have the opportunity to positively assist tourists in Pattaya.

The police-like uniform will be discarded and replaced with a choice of a red or a yellow T-shirt and the volunteers will be allowed to greet tourist at the entrance to Walking Street with the simple statement: “How can I help you”.

 

Khun Chakrabongse concluded his address with a promise that farang volunteers will never again be able to exert any kind of authority.

 

Any volunteer officer previously being authorized to perform law enforcement duties will be given 2 weeks to hand in any official uniform that they may have and there will be 30 days amnesty program for them to report any violation of duties that they may have resorted to.

 

Tomorrow will be the first time since the volunteer police program started on 1996 that the streets of Pattaya will be free of such contamination of the Police force.

Yes it IS such a problem, IMO

Far too many of them strutted round, hunting in packs, thinking and looking like LAPD cops, ffs

I have never heard anyone, Thai, or otherwise, business owners or tourists have a good word to say about any of them

No wonder there is growing resentment in some quarters when FALANGS can have Thais running for cover when they see them coming.

Yes, these illegal sellers that haunt Walking Street CAN be a fucking nuisance, but its a THAI problem and one that THAIS should sort out.

Well, for the record then. Once I got myself in a bit of trouble, and a few TP guys were of excellent assistance to me and my Thai GF. Kudo's to them.

 

When I see them on WS I don't see them making trouble, but I do see enough people with issues talking to them and receiving help.

 

Once I saw a farang guy lying in the street, having been beaten up by some Thai (they had gone already). After a while 2 Tourist police guys came, talked to the guy, one went with him to the hospital to take care of things.

 

Maybe I'm the only one seeing the good things?

That would all be fine and dandy IF thats all they did.

But, give some types of sad people a uniform and a little bit of leeway and they will bite your fucking hand off and abuse their privilege!!!!

When they get ideas above their station is when they need their wings clipping, in no uncertain manner, IMO

If this thread isnt an April Fools, then they sure seem to have had their wings clipped, i am glad to say

No more strutting down Walking Street, 6 abreast with that air of "come and have a go if you think you're hard enough"

No more pepperspray accusations levelled at them

JUST do what they were originally asked to volunteer for. No more, no less
