STI test tomorrow - what can I expect?

I'm booked in to get an STI screen tomorrow, what should I expect? I'm seeing the practice nurse because I couldn't get in to see the doctor. Will she want to know my history (just one person but he was sleeping about) because I don't feel ready to talk about that yet.

Also what STIs do they check for? Is it really all of them or is it just the kind of main ones?

Will they do a pregnancy test while I'm there? (I have an implant but i'm paranoid because I haven't had a period in months).

Do you sleep around a lot and do bareback sex?

They will do all the main tests about 5 I think. or only do one if that is what you wish.

They don't usually ask your history at the clinics, a hospital may be different.

Are you a woman or are you a man that just identifies as a woman?

and: where are you?

a clinic in pattaya will take a blood and urin sample and ask 0 questions. a doctor / nurse in a hospital might ask questions. no reason to lie to them. be honest and ask whatever you want.

if you want to do a pregnancy test, then say so.

they will test whatever you ask for.

if it's outside of pattaya / thailand: might be quite different.

I had such a test in Canada many years before, it was terrible! So is this the only way - to put a q-tip in the pee-hole (it hurts again while writing this) or do some other testing methods exist?

If it's just to tell whether you have an STI or not then they will just collect blood, urine and a throat swab, depending on your history.

If they find something in your urin or you have symptoms allready then the doc will ask for a urethra swab to do cutures and test different antibiotics.

At least thats the protocoll in germany. Apperantly its to prevent antibiotic resistance.

  • 4 weeks later...

If after the trip and there is no symptom and everything seems ok, which STDs should I get checked out? My local clinics they each check different ones from other clinics.

I think you want to wait a few weeks in order for results to show up accurately. I think 4-6 weeks covers most, but there's stuff like HIV + syphillis which can take a few months. Copy/paste from a google search:

chlamydia 7–21 days
genital herpes 2–12 days
gonorrhea 1–14 days
hepatitis A 15–50 days
hepatitis B 8–22 weeks
hepatitis C 2–26 weeks
HIV 2–4 weeks
HPV 1 month–10 years (depending on type)
oral herpes 2–12 days
syphilis 3 weeks–20 years (depending on type)
trichomoniasis 5–28 days

I went to Planned Parenthood after one month and they asked a bunch of questions to assess my risk and determine which tests to run. I answered yes to sleeping with someone who has sex for money(or injects drugs) and here's what they tested for:

  • Hepatitis C (they told me this was a new standard test as it seems to be on the rise)
  • HIV
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis (I think this was added because of the yes to sex workers question)

I also explicitly asked to test for oral chlamydia + gonorrhea. I probably should have asked for a herpes blood test to cover all my bases, but I think I'll ask for another full panel when the ~3 month mark rolls around just for peace of mind. My insurance (UnitedHealthcare) ended up covering all of it but $3 (looks like for the blood draw).

Thanks a lot for that, that was very informative and helpful.

I am getting all you got except Hepatitis C, I will ask for one.
