Fire burns more than incense at Pattaya shop

Just after 3:30 on Wednesday afternoon fire fighters, police, and rescue services were called to the scene of a fire that had broken out and taken hold of an open-sided shop situated next to the Pattaya to Bangkok bus station on North Pattaya road. It took three fire engines, six or seven firefighters, and rescue personnel about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control. A 52-year-old man who claimed to be a medium said the fire started because many worshippers had come to the shrine area since it was a special religious day to make merit and burn things like candles and joss-sticks. The self-proclaimed mystic said he usually sat around most days talking to people in a funny voice while being possessed by the spirits of animals such as elephants, chickens, and the occasional pig. He said he had wandered off in search of a trough or some seed, and while away a gust of wind had somehow set fire to enough flammable material to cause a rather unsightly blaze. Damage to the shop and the various spirit shrines and other semi-religious material is estimated at 10 million baht.
