Leica D-LUX 4

Recommended Posts

I know Leica cameras are very expensive, but I do not carrying around my Canon 40D. Any experiences with these cameras? I am all about quality and want some no kidding experiences or suggestions for high quality compact cameras. I really want to take some nice pics my next trip. Thanks guys!

If you are looking for a great pocket camera the will produce virtually the same results as the D-LUX 4 get the Panasonic Lumix LX3.

I have an LX3, and it's outstanding. I've shot with all kinds of film and digital cameras over the years, and the LX3 is head and shoulders above any other pocket camera I've ever owned including my old Contax.

It can shoot RAW (though the software for handling the LX3 RAW file is somewhat finicky), and has a great JPEG processing engine in camera.

I've been told at camera stores in Seattle and elsewhere that the Panasonic LX3 and Leica D-LUX 4 are built in the same factory in Japan. I find this totally believable when you look at the two cameras side by side.

The LX3 is a bit less than 400 USD (as of Feb. 2010) from places like J&R in New York City. Also, they are starting to appear used on Craigslist for about 300 USD.

If the LX3 is too pricey look for a used Lumix TZ5. It doesn't shoot RAW, and it's not got the fast and wide lens of the LX3, but the JPEG quality out of the camera is truly fabulous. You can pick up a used TZ5 for less than 150 USD.

hope this helps,

David G.
