"Room Assigned on Arrival", what does it mean?

I try to book into The Key Premier Sukhumvit Bangkok via Agoda.

- Deluxe Room is 937 Baht (pretax) per night

- Room Assigned on Arrival is 973 Baht

What does it mean exactly "assigned on arrival"? Does it mean possible upgrading, because no other rooms can be worse.

Has anyone ever booked a "Deluxe Room Assigned on Arrival before and what's your experience?

It just means you get the shitiest room available, of course you could get lucky and get a suite. But not likely.

Maybe they have worse rooms that are not listed in Agoda?

Often those bookings like “deluxe” or “superior” come in twins and doubles.    They give them out at first come first serve basis….if all the doubles are gone, you will be assigned a twin.
Sometimes there is a special requests space in the booking where you can state your preference…eg no smoke, high floor, double etc.

Not sure  how much notice they take though.

I have booked similar rooms in other places. If it’s busy, you’ll get whatever. If it’s not, you’ll probably get a decent room for cheap.

For best results, use during slow times or mid-week stays.

What do you think it means?

I mean, seems universally clear.

"room assigned upon arrival" means the room type will be unknown unless you arrive at the hotel.

And also, perhaps more importantly, contains the implication that you’re not guaranteed a room if you just turn up on the doorstep: hotel might be fully booked. (No room available or, as our friend above states, you might end up paying way over the odds for the shittiest room in the hotel, which is the only one unoccupied at that time.)

Hence it being much cheaper to book a room (of specific type/standard) in advance. A hotel advertises that incentive so they can arrange staff/ordering schedules and (if you’re a no show) they can make money on an empty room (no refunds for no-shows, presumably).

Ron went home for a meal and a wash, but what he had seen over there did not let him rest.
