String of ‘tourist mugging in Pattaya

Why do I get the feeling the headline should be "police act after a string of insurance scams involving tourists"?

Everyone should be safe to walk down the streets with gold chains or even 100,000 baht sticking out of your shirt pocket.  In a perfect world, you could.  But the world isn’t perfect, and the biggest red light district in this imperfect world isn’t an exception.  It’s hard to feel sorry for someone that removes a 45,000฿ gold chain and leaves it alone in a room with someone he’s known for about an hour.

Not sure why there's a number of people here in this forum calling Indians stupid for wearing expensive gold or calling it an insurance scam.

- Indians have always worn gold without having so many thefts as seen in the previous few weeks. So this is something new.
- Pretty sure its not an insurance scam. AFAIK no company in India gives out insurance for gold this cheap, and can be worn. Most insurance is only for gold that you keep locked up. For gold that you wear, its usually for ones that are worth millions and come with their own restrictions. So the tourists who are losing gold in the streets of pattaya are not a part of some elaborate insurance scam.
- Its easy to blame the victim. They're just here on a holiday. For a lot of them this is not the first time and Pattaya has not been this unsafe for people walking around with gold before.

Finally, I find it hard to believe that the Cops have not been able to control it. Most of it is happening in one street: Walking Street.
Meanwhile, they found a thief who wore a mask and stole from a gold shop within 12 hours.

While I do not agree with having something expensive on you while travelling, victim blaming and calling it an insurance scam is uncalled for.

This is not too surprising. I remember seeing a video a month ago of a European vlogger getting his necklace stolen from a freelancer on sukhumvit road. If you go outside the tourist areas, some thai people are living pretty rough. There's also lots of drug and gambling addictions that make people resort to crime like this.

People should learn to defend themselves and stand their ground.

Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
