Can anyone recommend me a good Android app to learn some basic Thai?

Hey all

I'm looking to learn some basic Thai.

Nothing huge, just enough to get around and not look like a total newbie on the ground.

Has anyone learned using an app and can recommend one?

Been using this - 15 minutes a day for 18 months…not bad, I know 500 words+…enough for basic conversations. Paid around $150.00 for 2 years.

I learned basic Thai from "Thai for Beginners" book, Benjawan Poomsan Becker. Comes with two CD's.

Suggest seek in eBay Australia - Buy or sell practically anything on eBay, the world's online marketplace

and in booko Compare book & DVD prices in Australia

Foreign language bookshops in Melbourne, details and addresses are on  foreign language bookshop melbourne - Search (bing.com)

Good luck.

Please keep in mind that everything I write is based on my own experiences, my personal preferences and my expectations. YMMV!

Find yourself a hot mute dancer. Problem solved. There used to be a pair of hot ones at the Office in LK Metro. Some in Insomnia. They honk like deer during sex. Reply back with whatever animal sounds you've mastered over the years. Wear a tiger loin cloth thong. Helmet with antlers. Camo army fatigue condom.

(many use Pimsleur Thai to learn the basics).

If you don't like to actively study and memorize, try this science based approach using comprehensible input:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWBek-qVDuFNsvFbRClPjrA

It basically mimics the way children learn languages. Our brain is an awesome language machine, so it will figure out languages by noticing patterns and basically assembling the language for you, without you having to consciously study/memorize.

Other than that, I found that using Lingopolo is very useful for times when I actually want to "study properly". It's free, and has a huge library of flashcards. It starts off with the most common/basic stuff first, and builds on that. It also uses "non-perfect" audio on purpose to train your ear and brain.

If I had to start all over again, I might just do Comprehensible Thai 100%. But this kind of method is more suited for long-term language acquisition and won't be a quick way to get started with conversations. So it might not be for you if you only intend to use the language infrequently.

These services seem to spend a lot of time explaining things in English, which doesn't necessarily help a lot to learn Thai.

Well it depends where you start. If you watch the videos the very basic beginner level you will of course watch a lot of  English explanation as well as a smattering of Thai. At a more advanced level there is much less need for English. Besides, I don’t use the vids much, preferring to build up a word/phrase bank which Itry and memorise (note - the Thai pronunciation can be practiced by touching the left hand icon.

While with ThaiPod 101 there is a lot of English in the beginner levels,

• they really drill correct pronunciation in both slow and natural speeds.

• They have specific vocabulary lists if you want to focus on specific topics.

• The paid version let's you save vocabulary as flash cards.

• It does offer valuable cultural information

I recommend Memrise if you just want to memorize a lot of phrases, although they might not all be useful for you. What you need is survival phrases for everyday use. Going to a language school for a bit might be a good idea!

For the very basics you can try Pimsleur.  It's an audio series.  You can get it for free from the Pirate Bay.

Some snobs rag on Pimsleur but it's great for getting good at speaking and understanding very basic stuff that you can actually use from day one.  I've used Pimsleur for both Thai and Japanese and it's excellent for getting started.

I'm using youtube vids to learn Thai phrases.  Whoever recommended the learn with Shelby channel; I've been watching it and its good.  I dont need to get fluent, just need enough to get around when I'm in the LOS.

Trust me, I have no idea what I'm doing.
