Does a Nightcap Help You Sleep?

Recommended Posts

The "official", medical answer is that alcohol may help you to fall asleep but later on you will wake up and you wont be able to get a good night sleep.

But if you ask around your friends they may tell you that they have no problem with sleeping when they're drinking a bit before bed.

So what are your experiences?

I can't remember...

You're here now where you should have been all along.

I do not wear a nightcap - reminds me of old movies

I sleep in the raw.

A night cap does not work for me.

Drinking one to two drinks keeps me more awake and when I finally do sleep I do not sleep as well.

Get more exercise and try a magnesium supplement if you can’t sleep.

True, I had trouble sleeping until I started taking magnesium.

I don't drink but a quick hand shandy before bed gets me tired.

I'm somewhat obsessed by my Fitbit sleep tracking feature.  I have found that if I get drunk, I will sleep all night, but it's a restless sleep, meaning my heartrate is elevated and I'm in REM most of the night.  If I only have a couple of drinks, my heartrate is a little lower, but I'm still in REM most of the night and I'm likely to wake up in the middle of the night and will have a difficult time falling back to sleep.  If I don't drink at all for a few days and get in some exercise, my heartrate is in the 50's and I get the best, most restful sleep, mostly in deep and light sleep phases throughout the night.

So at least for me, the scientific research is spot on.

Weirdly, an Irish Coffee-caffeine and all- seems to do the trick for me if my last port of call is a decent restaurant when I’m on holiday …..

That’s exactly it. With alcohol, you don’t get into the correct stages. If you want current science, check out “Why We Sleep” by Matthew Walker:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34466963-why-we-sleep

Matthew Walker is a British scientist and professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on the impact of sleep on human health and disease. Previously, he was a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

I found it a fascinating read.

Also: if you are older and feeling run down and irritable, get your testosterone checked. I started HRT and my sleep is sooo much better.

Heh! Yeah, used to do that. But weed makes me paranoid (and the weed these days!! When I grew up it was only Mexican dirt weed, and wasn’t powerful.) and when I get paranoid, I don’t sleep… 😑

From my own experience, yes to both of these statements.

Nope….. gave up alcohol more than two years ago, because it triggers gout. Now pretty much gout free (unless I eat some trigger food, but then only a mild attack). Now also sleep, and generally feel better, to boot.

Unfortunately…… Never a big drinker, I did none-the-less enjoy 2 or 3 drinks, a couple or three evenings a week, usually with tucker.

Greetings,

I have suffered insomnia all my life! Currently, my remedy for full night sleep is 5mg of Melatonin with one drop of THC oil! Good night and pleasant dreams!

I used to think a nightcap would help me crash, but it usually left me tossing and turning halfway through the night.

Lately, I’ve been sticking to thc weed gummies instead—they seem to chill me out without the weird wake-ups. Still, everyone’s different, though, so it might not work the same for you.

TImes 2 to this.  Actually found some CBD gummies at a Pharmacy(one just to west of LK entrance on diana) that are almost as good as ones I use in Canada.  5mg cbd each gummy and makes for a very good sleep for me.  Bit of a warning tho is if you have too many nightcaps and than take one of these it sure can cause me some nasty acid reflux(only time I ever get this) if you do not eat an apple or apple juice before going to bed.
