Those engines sure look old-school. Are they pure jets rather than turbofans?

As @jetdoc points out, the Pratt & Whitney JT8D on the B737-200s is a low-bypass (0.96 to 1) turbofan engine.

The CFM56-3 engines on the B737 Clasics (-300,-400,-500) has a 60 inch fan.  Bypass ratio 5.9-6.0 to 1 and is 20% more fuel efficient than the JT8D engine.

The CFM56-7 engines used on the NGs (-600,-700,-800,-900) with a 61 inch fan & FADEC controlled.  Bypass ratio 5.1-5.5 to 1 and provides an additional 8% fuel efficiency over the-3 engines.

The B737 Max is powered by the CFM 1B LEAP engine.  Has a 69.4 inch fan and bypass ratio of 9.1 to 1.  The LEAP engine is 15% more fuel efficient than the CFM56-7 engines used on the NGs.

I’m surprise the Chinese let the US have a go at the black boxes … kinda hard now to keep it under wraps now, if it turns out to be true.

I admit I am scared to fly on this plane but I will do, if it's the plane selected for the flight. Everyone I know who has flown in one said it was very nice and had no issues during the flights.

The aircraft is fitted with a gravel kit to enable operating on gravel runways.

The nose gear has a gravel deflector and the booms on the front of the engine inlet cowls are vortex  disapators designed to prevent the engines from ingesting gravel during takeoff and landings.

I landed on gravel several times when working for Dresser Rand on the North Slope.

Ethiopian accident Investigation Board has released their final report on the Max crash.  A complete whitewash and coverup of the incredible ineptness of the pilots on board the fatal flight and the inadequacies of Ethiopian Air with regards to pilot training.

In light of what the Ethiopian pilots should have know and their failures to respond correctly on every issue from the moment the aircraft left the ground has sparked others to speak out.
