They just won the series in South Africa after retiring the likes of Warnie, Mc Grath, Hayden, Gillespie and a few others. Their new team is made up of mostly new players. Only Ponting, the captain, has been around for a long time. Nobody outside of Oz ever heard of Aussie players like Hilfenhaus, Siddle, the prodigy opening batsman Hughes and a few others. Well, the new team just flogged the pretenders from South Africa.

The Aussies probably could field another couple of new sides to beat what the rest of the world has to offer. The Poms must be shaking in their knees at the prospect of another 5 - Zip whitewash in the next Ashes series against our new boys.

great series win for the aussies, but you seem to have forgotten to mention they just came off series DEFEATS against SA and India :Laugh1: i reckon if we get our act together this summer, it will be another defeat for the aussies :D

You Poms have not achieved much in the Champions League for a very long time. We cannot paticipate in the Euro competion, otherwise our club teams would probably beat the likes of Man U, Chelsea, AC Milan, Barcelona, et cetera as well. Our national team got robbed by a crook ref in the last World Cup against Italy. England was not even good enough to qualify then.

It looks like England will qualify for the World Cup in South Africa next year. Australia will be there also. I hope we will get a chance to play against the Poms and beat them, like we did in a friendly a couple of years ago. Good luck to you with your "Soccer". It only ranks a poor fourth in Oz, after Aussie RULES, Rugby Leage and Rugby Union.

Botham was a champion cricket player and was a good "Soccer" player as well. :)

Hi Todder

It's true the Aussie lost to India in India, and then again to the springboks in OZ. It's also true your blokes lost to the West Indies in the carribean - this was the 1st series win by the Windies, in over 5 years.

Fair to say the poms aren't travelling that well themselves. The Aussies did hit a hurdle & have re-invented the team & are on the up again. Hughes had a great junior record - and now has stepped into the international arena and looks right at home. Siddle is a workhorse - hits the deck hard - steams in all day. Hilfenhaus will be dangerous in english conditions. Johnson starting to show how good he is - his first few tests were ordinary. If the Ozzies can find a new spin bowler (even a third as good as Warne) they will sit at the top of world cricket for another 10 years.

Who is the England captain this week? - Is it still on a rotational basis?

I did not forget Johnson. He already got his Baggy Green a while ago and will be there to stay for a long time to come. The girls love him as well. :GoldenSmile1:

Love him or hate him. In my opinion, he is one of the best you ever had. He has been one of the most exiting and colourful people in English Cricket ever. Only Warnie can match his personality, but I think Ian Botham would win, if the two of them should happen to have a bit of a biff. Warnie is better when it comes to getting Pommie sheilas aroused by sending mobile phone messages. :Drunk_Party:

Disagree chiller with where you rate oz soccer in terms of popularity. The domestic competiton crowds compare favourably with league and union. Melbourne being way ahead. As far as international teams go the socceroos are up there with cricket team. World cup time the country came to a halt with the performance in Germany. Only the Olympics has come close. Will only get bigger.

We are always running for the thrill of it thrill of it

Always pushing up the hill searching for the thrill of it

On and on and on we are calling out and out again

Never looking down I’m just in awe of what’s in front of me.

I am pleased to be wrong. I watched Australia play against Thailand in the Asian Cup in the Indoor Stadium in Huamark last year and I was impressed with our team. The score went 4:0 our way. It was a pleasure to see Viduka, Schwarzer, Harry Kewell and the rest of the team perform. Unfortumately, they all play in Europe as our A League cannot match the Euro salaries. We will do well again in South Africa next year. :MonkeyFight:

hi mate,

i agree the aussies have bounced back very well, other teams would have lay down and died after two series defeats.

but i still dont think this lot are a great side YET? they can be beaten.

good point about who is "England captain" this week?

it seems whoever they give it to starts scoring centuries :MonkeyFight: so maybe they should change it every game?

it will be intersting to see how the aussie rookie bowlers adapt to english conditions?

my local cricket club have had many Aussie/NZ pro's over the years, and they all have struggled early in the season.

i think it will be a great ashes series, and there wont be much in it.

Hi todder,

Australian cricket got rid of most of their "old" champions. We have a strong local comprtition with heaps of talent. Gillespie, Langer , Warne, Hayden, Mc Grath, et cetera had to be replaced eventually. The selectors knew it was time for the older blokes to step aside. They did not muck about and got rid of our "old" heros all at once. Our new boys beat South Africa in their home country without much ado. What can you say about Hughes, a 20 year old bloke making back to back centuries in the second test.

I enjoyed the the Ashes series in England , when you managed to beat us. The The last Ashes series in Oz must have been embarrassing for you. I am looking forward to our next tussle in your country. I am confident our new boys will prevail and keep their position as the best cricket nation in the world. I agree with you about tossing a coin to decide who gets to bat first. Cheers

hi chiller,

i cant wait for the ashes series mate, it's funny how quickly people's opions change? six months ago i was very confinent england would win the ashes back :Drunk_Party: but now the best is a 50/50 chance, and that is if we get our act together.

i have a few aussie friends, who were certain the poms would win the series a while ago, now they have changed their tune also. :Laugh1:

i still think it will be close, we need to get harmy firing again, hopefully simon jones could get back in the team, and maybe michael vaughan also.

then we have a real chance.

In the interest of fairness....

1. English clubs own the Champs League right now & have done for a couple of years.

2. The EPL is followed on a big enough scale in Victoria which has a huge European population.

You only have to see the # of people wearing soccer tops to appreciate the level of interest it has.

The same for the Italian & Turkish leagues.

3. Australian club sides would get smashed off the park by an English club side.

The only Aussie of world class standard at the minute is Cahill.

Schwarzer, Kewell, Viduka, Emerton, et al are all past their best in the greater scheme of things.

Just bring on the poms, they are always good entertainment for us Aussies.

At least they try to achieve some sort of respectable results. I really think they have the ability ...but then again.......NO DEAL...GO AUSSIE GO

Posted

yes but the trouble with us aussies in cricket is not consistant atm. but now it is the building of a team that all countries have gone thru. just dont want the poms to win
