Just another hard luck story?...

After coming to Thailand 12 times (this being my 13th trip) and almost always going with freelancers rather than bar girls, I guess it had to happen some time.... I got rolled last night.

I am always very careful locking everything up in the room but I guess you get complacent after a while.

I picked this girl up in Spicey disco last night. After Spicey club closed around 5 or 6am she suggested that we go on to another club across the road. I don't remember the name and I had never been there before but there were a lot of people there and the place was rocking.

By the time we got back to the room I was dog tired. I put my money away in my luggage, and the luggage was attached by cord to a fixed object in the room. But for some reason I did not lock away my phone and camera like I normally do.

I woke up about midday and she was still there but then I fell asleep again and when I woke up at 3pm she had split....taking my camera and phone with her.

The hotel told me to to go Lumpini police station and they filled out a report for me in Thai. I then asked if they were going to come to the hotel. They said they would. Yeah right, I thought!

Anyway I headed back to the hotel and asked security if they had any CCTV cameras and to my surprise they did and started fast forwarding through the tapes from the cameras outside the lifts in reception and on my floor.

It was painfully hard work because I could not remember the time when I had come back to the hotel and of course I didn't know when she had left.

Then an even bigger surprise 2 of the boys in brown turned up in their full uniform and regalia and joined in watching the tapes. Heck they were taking this thing seriously!

After a while the police left saying that I should let them know if they found the photos. Eventually the security guys found the photos with us arriving at 9.30am and her leaving at 2.30pm. I phoned the police and they said that I should take the tape to the police station tomorrow evening.

I also noticed that she had left behind a few long hairs in the bed and she had even smoked a cigarette and left it in the ashtray in the bathroom. It seems that this was just an opportunistic theft and that as I was still sleeping she thought why not help herself to the stuff in my jeans. However the police said that they did not think that it would be worthwhile taking finger prints from the cigarette and the ashtray and he laughed when I suggested whether they had a DNA database.

So I don't think I will be getting anything back. I phoned my mobile and it had been switched off and she would need to know the code in order to switch it on again.

The only thing that I could think of was to go back to the same club for a couple of nights to see if she turns up there.

It was really bizarre but when I was looking at the video monitor in reception with the police that a small crowd gathered, both falang men and Thai girls to see what was happening and offering their advice.

One guy laughed though when I said that I would re-visit the club. I would be wasting my time he said and one Thai girl suggested that the girl would already be up country some where now.

It was really strange seeing the footage of the girl and me walking into the reception and then straight into the lifts past the security guy...me not bothering to ask the girl to register her ID card. I felt like screaming at the screen 'Why don't you get her to leave her ID card'. :Drunk_Party: Then there were the photos of her leaving on her own.

I know what I should have done but as I said if you come to Thailand too often you may just get complacent.

But the police taking it seriously when this sort of thing happens all the time was a real surprise. I am just waiting for that call from the victims support unit! :)

The real bummer is that the phone was a company mobile phone. I will have to try and explain to my boss what I was doing in Thailand when I told everyone that I had gone "skiing"....and the circumstances in which I lost the phone...a hooker took it whilst I was asleep!

Sorry to hear about that. A guy I used to know once accepted the offer of a Thai girl to come to his apartment for free (He was as tight as and couldn't resist a "bargain"). She drugged him and robbed him and even took the time to cook herself an omelet and eat it before she left. A warning to us all, thanks for the heads up.

Does anyone know a good place to get a dirt cheap mobile phone and a good basic digital camera at low prices anywhere in Bangkok or Pattaya?

I'm sure he did laugh. As you say, after quite a few trips to Thailand you become a bit complacent. Mix that with a shed load of beer and always taking FL's and it was liable to happen sooner or later. Cheer up mate, you're still in the LOS and those lost possessions can be replaced. I never bother with insurance but I hope you have?

I agree that I didn't think that she would go into hiding for a few days just for a phone or camera - as she could earn as much from 3 nights genuine work as she would get from selling the phone or camera to someone.

I went back to the club where I met her to see if she turned up and I thought I recognised her. She seemed to be ignoring me so I went up to one of the security guards and explained what had happened. He and the other two security guards immediately sprung into action and told the girl that she should come outside with us. The girl followed with her friends.

The security guard put my accusations to her and she started getting angry. Her female friend also started shouting. In the better light I had second thoughts that it could be the girl and I wasn't so sure now. Also, she did seem genuinely outraged at the suggestions.

The previous night I had drunk a lot and it was quite dark in the club so I didn't get that good a look at her. I know it sounds daft.

I told the security guards that I may have made a mistake and then the girl and her friend got really angry and had to be pushed back by the security guards and the guards were a bit irritated as well saying that I needed to be sure before I made these accusations.

I offered to buy the girls a couple of drinks and the security guards helped to smooth things over with them. I think the guards were sympathetic to my situation as they know that a lot of this goes on.

So, I am not sure what the best approach would be if I saw her again and I was sure it was her. Ask the security guards to help? Phone the police? Go up to her and maybe suggest that I could give her a decent amount of money if she returned the goods, more than she could get by selling them if she had not already sold them (this is probably a bit silly as she would fear a trap)

No, the chances of recovering the goods are slim to none even if I did bump into her again. I just have to try and treat it as a very expensive lesson.

I also think it would be best to avoid confrontation. Walking along Sukhumvit road this afternoon I saw several stalls where they were selling nasty looking knives, pepper spray and tasers. It would be so easy for these girls to carry one of those in their handbags assuming of course that they could not take care of you without the use of these aids...and other Thais standing around are likely to jump in to help her.

But I am heartened by the fact that the Thai police, security guards, hotel staff were going out of their way to help. They seem like us to be genuinely keen to try and put a stop to the activities of these theives who are helping to give the Thais a bad image.

The sad thing when incidents like this occur is it starts to make you think there all untrustworthy.which isn't the case.

well that just about tells ya to trust absolutely NOBODY dont it..??..my mate has been over there a few times and he told me to trust nobody, you take a girl back to your room, put them straight into the bathroom to shower with the door closed, then lock up all your valuables into the safe (thats if there is one provided) and lock it up...remember these girls do this everyday to boost their income...as myself and three mates hit Pattaya in june '09, i will be sure that each of us watch our backs... :MonkeyFight:

I had my phone knocked off a couple of years back. Had a trusted BG ring the number for me & arrange to buy it back, only cost me a couple of thousand baht, well worth it.
