Yes and not just recently either.

must be really low now.

i flew last july SYD/HKG/SYD protesting  just in its first weeks the flight fully book i was lucky only my row of 4 seats had 1 other  person so we had a empty seat each ( changed seats online)

The return leg  in december protesting in full swing i had the whole row of 4 seat to my self from HKG to SYD and nearly every one had no one next to them.

They were in a real bad spot BEFORE the Coronavirus due to the issues in Hong Kong.

Now theyve cut 30% of their entire route network.    All employees must take a mandatory 2 week holiday without pay soon.   They've even temporarily closed some of their best lounges in HKG.

My favorite airline to travel to Asia.   I hope they figure out a way but it's not looking good.

I was actually supposed to be flying Hong Kong to Wuhan with them last Saturday.  Never flown with them before, so I certainly haven't noticed low passenger capacity.

I'm booked to fly with Cathay Pacific on the a350-1000 from Manchester to Manila via HK at the end of this month.

It's a 11.5 hr flight to HK so if the capacity is down, I might get lucky and have an empty row to myself ?!!

Mr magoo.

CX are operating 330 and 777 on the international routes and there is no significant difference in capacity from other carriers. Flown CX on multible occasion and its, in general, a recommended carrier

Cathay is in real danger of folding if the coronavirus thing continues for a while.   They just announced they are closing a lot of their lounges in HK due to low numbers of travelers.   They were cutting capacity on some US routes before the outbreak and its only getting worse.  Very good airline that may be on its way out.

The 2 weeks forced unpaid vacation for all employees is kind of the writing on the wall I think

I guess the double whammy of the protests and the coronavirus are taking it’s toll on Hong Kong. It will be interesting to see what Hong Kong morphs into if the downward trend continues as it is. One of the big three airlines for people departing on the west coast of the US (Singapore, Cathay, & EVA). Of course there is also United airlines, American & Delta.

United Airlines has postponed flights to/from China and Hong Kong to at least APRIL 24th.  This Coronavirus is serious.

Cathay Dragon flight from Phnom Penh to HK was cancelled today.  Tons of pissed off people at the airport trying to rebook or figure another route.  Talked to one girl and no one got any notification till 2 hours and that just to some people.  Complete clusterfuck.

Wow. Flew on that flight just last month. Feel sorry for anyone affected by it and it sucks they didn't tell you before your flight. Its easily a wasted $10/15 taxi ride if you are paying non grab prices.

No way in hell would they pay for hotels etc either.

I flew them a week ago. Noticed that the entire business cabin had empty center seats (situated 1 x 2 x 1), so about half capacity.

They are in real trouble and are currently responding badly to customer service problems. I have spoken to several friends that are having problems similar to what I am about to describe.

  • Tuesday - received 4 emails saying that my flights (BKK-SIN-BKK) had been cancelled. No other options given.
  • Wednesday - tried to apply for a refund on their website. could not apply due to technical difficulties.
  • Called them. On hold for 1 hour. Lady says that flights are not cancelled.
  • Look on their website to see if flights show. Can not even request a departure city.
  • Look on Orbitz. No CX flights.
  • Thursday - Flights now show as cancelled.
  • Cancel my reservation. Refund transaction fails saying technical problems exit and start over.
  • 6 hours later try again and it goes through.

This is SH*T customer service. The IT system is a joke. It has obviously never been stress tested.

I have flown with them for many years. No more. This used to be a good airline.

Given the reported fragile state of Thai Airways you have to wonder how long it will be before they need help.

Another one that have been struggling is Bangkok Airways.  Hard to think they carry much traffic other than tourists, they must be really bleeding.  Even before Corona they were in a rescue plan.   Serves them right though, the whole Samui Airport thing is one of the biggest rackets I've come across.

I usually fly Eva air to thailand.  Been checking the website daily for cheaper prices due to lower demand but nothing is changing.  Anyone heard anything about EVA and their current position.  I got caught up in their strike last year for my flight to thailand and it was a cluster to say the least.

Wondering if I should use them again.  I always fly out of chicago, and detest using united.

I left Thailand February 13th with Cathay Pacific. The first flight to Hong Kong the was a lot of empty seats. Then from Hong Kong to Dulles there was some empty seats but not a lot. I have flown this exact itinerary my last four trips and this was the first time with any empty seats. The previous flights the airplane was always packed.

I live pretty much in the Pattaya area now, but visit Chicago once a year or so to see the Grandkids etc.

I traveled a lot on One World when I was working and have been working off the points with Business Class tickets for years now. The next one (Songkran) will be the end of my One World points. I have been researching what I want to do in the future for Business Class tickets. At this time, out of Chicago, Eva is my probable choice. Love the schedule. ORD-TPE-BKK leaves a little after midnight. Three hour or so layover in TPE.

Yes, the schedule is perfect for me too.  Leave at midnight when I'd be sleeping anyway.  Leave on sunday from bkk at noon and I'm home to chicago by 9pm. Sleep for 5 hours at hotel and catch 7am flight back to my hometown and work.  As long as ohare weather doesnt screw me, I'm good to go.

Not that it's an acceptable excuse, but I think ALL Asian carriers are buried with calls these days.

I was dealing with Hainan in late January, and it was a HUGE pain in the ass.  Hold time was pushing an hour and a half, and even then I would get the runaround.  Still haven't received my refund.

I certainly hope that Cathay pulls out of this dangerous downward cycle.  I have a miles booking with them in November (using AA miles) that I will cancel at some point (replaced with a ticket I purchased on Qatar because fare was too good to pass up).  I'm holding off for now and hoping to change it to another date, rather than cancel it.

Rumor has it Hainan business, and same for Hong Kong Airlines.  NOT a good time to be a Chinese carrier that is not owned by the government.

I have been trying to get a refund from Cathay Pacific through a third party based in China for a few weeks as I was supposed to fly with them from Hong Kong to Wuhan.  Part of the time was Chinese New Year so the third party would have been short staffed.

Air Asia were quick to give me a refund for a flight I had booked for last weekend using the same third party.
