Alphaville 1988: Crime, Punishment and the Battle for New York City's Lower East Side

BY MICHAEL CODELLA & BRUCE BENNETT

A raw, gritty memoir - part true-life cop thriller, part unputdownable history of a storied time and place - that will grip you by the throat until the explosive end Alphabet City in 1988 burned with heroin, radicalism, and anti-police sentiment. Working as a plainclothes narcotics cop in the most high-voltage neighborhood in Manhattan, Detective Sergeant Mike Codella earned the nickname "Rambo" from the local dealers, as well as a $50,000 bounty on his head.

The son of a cop who grew up in a mob neighborhood in Brooklyn, Codella understood the unwritten laws of the shadowy businesses that ruled the streets. He knew that the further east you got from the relative safety of 5th Avenue, Washington Square Park and NYU, the deeper you entered the sea of human misery, greed, addiction, violence and all the things that come with an illegal retail drug trade run wild.

With his partner, Gio, Codella made it his personal mission to put away Davie Blue Eyes - a stone cold murderer and the head of Alphabet City's heroin supply chain. Despite the hell they endured - all the beatings and gunshots, the footchases and close calls - Codella and Gio always saw Alphabet City the same way: worth saving. Alphaville, Codella's riveting, no-holds-barred memoir, resurrects the vicious streets that Davie Blue Eyes owned, and tells the story of how Codella bagged the so-called Forty Thieves that surrounded Davie, slowly working his way to the head of the snake one scale at a time.

With the blistering narrative spirit of The French Connection, the insights of a seasoned insider, and a relentless voice that reads like the city's own, Alphaville is at once the story of a dedicated New York cop, and of New York City itself.

Disgrace

BY J.M. COETZEE

Set in post-apartheid South Africa, J. M. Coetzee’s searing novel tells the story of David Lurie, a twice divorced, 52-year-old professor of communications and Romantic Poetry at Cape Technical University.

Lurie believes he has created a comfortable, if somewhat passionless, life for himself. He lives within his financial and emotional means.

Though his position at the university has been reduced, he teaches his classes dutifully; and while age has diminished his attractiveness, weekly visits to a prostitute satisfy his sexual needs. He considers himself happy.

However, when Lurie seduces one of his students, he sets in motion a chain of events that will shatter his complacency and leave him utterly disgraced.

His Illegal Self

BY PETER CAREY

When the boy was almost eight, a woman stepped out of the elevator into the apartment on East Sixty-second Street and he recognized her straightaway. No one had told him to expect it.

That was pretty typical of growing up with Grandma Selkirk . . . No one would dream of saying, Here is your mother returned to you. His Illegal Self is the story of Che "raised in isolated privilege by his New York grandmother, he is the precocious son of radical student activists at Harvard in the late sixties.

Yearning for his famous outlaw parents denied all access to television and the news, he takes hope from his long-haired teenage neighbor, who predicts, They will come for you, man.

They'll break you out of here. Soon Che too is an outlaw: fleeing down subways, abandoning seedy motels at night, he is pitched into a journey that leads him to a hippie commune in the Jungle of tropical Queensland.

Here he slowly, bravely confronts his life, learning that nothing is what it seems. Who is his real mother? Was that his real father? If all he suspects is true, what should he do?

Never sentimental, His Illegal Self is an achingly beautiful story of the love between a young woman and a little boy. It may make you cry more than once before it lifts your spirit in the most lovely, artful, unexpected way.

One Hundred Days : The Memoirs of the Falklands Battle Group Commander

by Sandy Woodward & Patrick Robinson..

The highly-acclaimed and most famous account of the Falklands War, written by the commander of the British Task Force.

On 5 April 1982, three days after the invasion of the Falkland Islands, British armed forces were ordered to sail 8,000 miles to the South Atlantic unaware of what lay ahead of them or whether they would be committed to war with Argentina.

In these engrossing memoirs, Admiral Sandy Woodward, Task Force commander from the aircraft carrier Hermes, takes us from day one to day one hundred of the conflict; from sailing through the waters of the Atlantic with hopes of a political settlement fading, and war becoming increasingly likely, to the repulse of the Argentinian navy and the daring amphibious landing at San Carlos Water.

The war, which cost the lives of over 1,000 men, has left a legacy of many historical debates and controversies, from the sinking of ships such as HMS Coventry, HMS Sheffield and Sir Galahad, and the Argentinian cruiser, the Belgrano, to wider issues such as what was it like to command and fight a modern air and naval war, the biggest naval action since World War II?

'One Hundred Days' is unique as a dramatic portrayal of the world of modern naval warfare, where despite the use of sophisticated equipment and communications, the margins for human error and courage were as wide as they were in the days of Nelson.

Madam Millie: Bordellos from Silver City to Ketchikan by Max Evans..

Mildred Clark Cusey was a wh*re, a madam, an entrepreneur, and above all, a survivor.

The story of Silver City Millie, as she referred to herself, is the story of one woman's personal tragedies and triumphs as an orphan, a Harvey Girl waitress on the Santa Fe railroad, a pr*stitute with innumerable paramours, and a highly successful bordello businesswoman.

Millie broke the mould in so many ways, and yet her life's story of survival was not unlike that of thousands of women who went West only to find that their most valuable assets were their physical beauty and their personality.

Petite at five feet tall with piercing blue eyes, Millie captured men's attention by her very essence and her unmistakable joie de vivre. Born to Italian immigrant parents near Kansas City, she and her sister were orphaned early and separated from each other. Millie learned hard lessons on the streets, but she never gave up and she vowed to protect and support her ailing older sister.

Caught in a domestic squabble in her foster home, Millie wound up in juvenile court with Harry Truman as her judge. This would be only the first of many brushes in her life with prominent politicians. When doctors diagnosed her sister with tuberculosis and recommended she move West to a Catholic home in Deming, New Mexico, Millie moved with her.

Expenses ran high and after a brief stint waiting tables as a Harvey Girl, Millie found that her meagre tips could easily be augmented by turning tricks.

Thus, out of financial need and devotion to her sister, Mildred Cusey turned to a life of pr*stitution and a career at which she soon excelled and became both rich and famous.

Havana Nocturne: How the Mob Owned Cuba & Then Lost it to the Revolution

BY T.J. ENGLISH..

In modern-day Havana, the remnants of the glamorous past are everywhere - old hotel-casinos, vintage American cars & flickering neon signs speak of a bygone era that is widely familiar & often romanticized, but little understood.

In Havana Nocturne, T.J. English offers a multifaceted true tale of organized crime, political corruption, roaring nightlife, revolution & international conflict that interweaves the dual stories of the Mob in Havana & the event that would overshadow it, the Cuban Revolution. As the Cuban people labored under a violently repressive regime throughout the 50's, Mob leaders Meyer Lansky & Charles "Lucky" Luciano turned their eye to Havana. To them, Cuba was the ultimate dream, the greatest hope for the future of the US Mob in the post-Prohibition years of intensified government crackdowns.

But when it came time to make their move, it was Lansky, the brilliant Jewish mobster, who reigned supreme. Having cultivated strong ties with the Cuban government & in particular the brutal dictator Fulgencio Batista, Lansky brought key mobsters to Havana to put his ambitious business plans in motion. Before long, the Mob, with Batista's corrupt government in its pocket, owned the biggest luxury hotels & casinos in Havana, launching an unprecedented tourism boom complete with the most lavish entertainment, the world's biggest celebrities, the most beautiful women & gambling galore.

But their dreams collided with those of Fidel Castro, Che Guevara & others who would lead the country's disenfranchised to overthrow their corrupt government & its foreign partners—an epic cultural battle that English captures in all its sexy, decadent, ugly glory. Bringing together long-buried historical information with English's own research in Havana - including interviews with the era's key survivors - Havana Nocturne takes readers back to Cuba in the years when it was a veritable devil's playground for mob leaders. English deftly weaves together the parallel stories of the Havana Mob - featuring notorious criminals such as Santo Trafficante Jr & Albert Anastasia and Castro's 26th of July Movement in a riveting, up-close look at how the Mob nearly attained its biggest dream in Havana and how Fidel Castro trumped it all with the revolution.

Seven Days of Rage: The Deadly Crime Spree of the Craigslist Killer by Paul Larosa.

When Manhattan model and masseuse Julissa Brisman went to meet a client at a luxury Boston hotel, she thought she'd be leaving the hotel with enough money to buy her little sister's school books.

But Philip Markoff, the handsome, clean-cut, twenty-two-year-old med student who hired Brisman on Craigslist, had different plans.

On April 14, 2009, guests notified management of a woman screaming on the twentieth floor, and Brisman was found in a pool of blood, with several bullet wounds to her torso and plastic restraints around her wrist.

hotel surveillance video captured Markoff's image, and an additional tip helped police connect him to attacks on several other women, including a prostitute who was tied up at a Boston hotel, and the assault of an exotic dancer in Rhode Island, both of which bear a striking similarity to the Brisman murder.

A skillful blend of hard journalism and fascinating yet chilling true-crime narrative, this headline-making story will appeal to fans of Ann Rule.

The elite police officers secretly launching Scotland's biggest ever offensive against organised crime had only one target. His name was Jamie Stevenson, but he was known as The Iceman, the biggest drugs trafficker the country has ever seen.

Suspected of a string of murders - including the gangland assassination of his best friend - Stevenson's decade-long rise was built on ruthless ambition, strategic cunning and calculated, brutal violence.

It left him at the head of one of Europe's biggest smuggling operations pouring tons of drugs and guns onto the streets of Scotland. "The Iceman" tells the astonishing story of Stevenson's rise and fall, offering a unique and explosive insight into Operation Folklore, the unprecedented four-year investigation that ended in his arrest.

It lays bare the blood-soaked business of Scotland's most powerful crime lord and, for the first time, exposes how he made - and laundered - his dirty millions.

How to Make Someone Love You Forever in 90 Minutes or Less by Nicholas Boothman..

It's time to stop leaving love to chance. Time to stop being too shy to meet someone, wondering why a promising first date wound up going nowhere, or realizing too late that it happened with the wrong person anyway. Nicholas Boothman has a much better way. Drawing on his expertise in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Boothman charts a three-step plan that will help anyone find the love of his or her life. Step one: get ready - come to know who you are through honest self-assessment, and then to know what type of person is your matched opposite - i.e., the person who completes you. Step two, the heart of the program, is working seriously on interpersonal skills - how to be charming, not alarming; flirt with confidence; synchronize body and voice to create trust and chemistry; keep enthusiasm high; even how to cast a wide social net and dress for a first meeting. Step three is about accelerating the kind of intimacy that leads to love, by finding "Me too!" triggers and mastering the art of incidental touch.

You'll learn to tap into key emotions through low-, medium-, and high-risk disclosures and how to intensify the nonverbal signals that turn sparks into a flame. All the while you'll establish a solid romantic foundation to convert this magic 90 minutes into a lifetime of love and commitment.

Born Fearless: Commando, Para, Mercenary, SAS, Pirate Hunter. by 'Big' Phil Campion, Damien Lewis by Phil Campion..

Not dead yet. Not kidnapped, captured, tortured or killed.

But he's come bloody close...Meet 'Big' Phil Campion. To his fellow operators he's a private military contractor. To you or me he's a mercenary, a soldier of fortune, a gun for hire selling violence to the highest bidder.

But to Big Phil it's all just another chapter in a life spent fighting in the shadows. Abandoned. Run-away. Half-beaten to death. Blown-up. Locked up. And all before the age of twenty.

This is the incredible true story of how Phil Campion survived all of that, and went on to complete Commando selection, Para selection, and to join the SAS - before fighting as a mercenary in the world's toughest war zones.

Undertaking deniable operations, freeing hostages and escaping terrorists hell bent on revenge - the dangers and insane risks of life as a private military operator eclipsed even those of waging war in an SAS Sabre Squadron.

Big Phil's story of life on the private military circuit ('The Circuit') is a high-octane blend of chasing fast bucks in a Wild West industry, whilst always staying one step ahead of the bad guys. 'I've often been asked if I've killed anyone. My answer: I didn't shoot to miss.' Phil Campion, January 2010.

Capote

BY GERALD CLARKE

Based on hundreds of hours of interviews with the man who authored In Cold Blood and Breakfast at Tiffany's, as well as with nearly everyone who knew him, this absorbing, definitive biography follows Truman Capote from his eccentric childhood in Alabama to the heights of New York society.

Featuring many photographs, this book also candidly recounts a gifted and celebrated writer's descent into the life of alcohol and drugs that would ultimately consume his bulldog spirit and staggering talent - but not before he'd hobnob with the likes of Grace Paley and Lee Radziwill, feud outrageously with Gore Vidal and Jacqueline Susann, and stage at New York's Plaza hotel the sensational Black and White Ball.

Part diary and part reportage, The Soccer War is a remarkable chronicle of war in the late twentieth century. Between 1958 and 1980, working primarily for the Polish Press Agency, Kapuscinski covered twenty-seven revolutions and coups in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. Here, with characteristic cogency and emotional immediacy, he recounts the stories behind his official press dispatches—searing firsthand accounts of the frightening, grotesque, and comically absurd aspects of life during war. The Soccer War is a singular work of journalism.

The Devil in the White City: A Saga of Magic and Murder at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson..

Intertwines the true tale of the 1893 World's Fair and the cunning serial killer who used the fair to lure his victims to their death. Combining meticulous research with nail-biting storytelling, Erik Larson has crafted a narrative with all the wonder of newly discovered history and the thrills of the best fiction. Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C.

The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds—a torture Palace complete with dissection table, gas chamber, and 3,000-degree crematorium.  Burnham overcame tremendous obstacles and tragedies as he organized the talents of Frederick Law Olmsted, Charles McKim, Louis Sullivan, and others to transform swampy Jackson Park into the White City, while Holmes used the attraction of the great fair and his own satanic charms to lure scores of young women to their deaths. What makes the story all the more chilling is that Holmes really lived, walking the grounds of that dream city by the lake. The Devil in the White City draws the reader into a time of magic and majesty, made all the more appealing by a supporting cast of real-life characters, including Buffalo Bill, Theodore Dreiser, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Edison, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and others. Erik Larson’s gifts as a storyteller are magnificently displayed in this rich narrative of the master builder, the killer, and the great fair that obsessed them both.

Pablo Escobar: My Father by Juan Pablo Escobar..

Until now, we believed that everything had been said about the rise and fall of the most infamous drug lord of all time, Pablo Escobar – from books to film to the cult series ‘Narcos’.

But these versions have always been told from the outside, only capturing half the truth, and never from the intimacy of his own home. Now, more than two decades after the full-fledged manhunt finally caught up with Escobar, his son brings us the dramatic truth as never before.

Here we find a man of contradictions – generosity and infinite love for his family; yet capable of the most extreme acts of cruelty and violence. In a deeply personal exploration of his father, we see the inner world of a man who was celebrated by some as a benevolent Robin Hood figure and by others, as a dangerous leader of the most ruthless mafia organisation in human history, reaping vengeance and death on anyone that might stand in his way.

When Escobar died, his then teenage son vowed revenge. But Escobar Jr. quickly recognised that meant following in his father's footsteps - something neither of them had ever wanted. With his change of heart, he denounced the Pablo Escobar legacy.

This is far from the story of a child seeking redemption, but a shocking look at the consequences of violence and his attempt to come to terms with it.
