British tourist in Phuket feared first Western victim of coronavirus

If this virus is emanating out of China you have to say..it'll go global, Chinese tourists everywhere. Some of the other obscure nasty stuff that happened, of African origin, was easier to contain, as there were not millions of tourists travelling to all parts of the globe out of there.

In other words, we are fucked. I am thinking 28 days type scenarios, and stocking up on tinned goods and dried pasta.

I just want to emphasize that the diagnosis is not confirmed as coronavirus as of publication of this article.

I've been wondering about this after reading last week that of the first three cases outside China, two were in Thailand.

Did that other Corona virus, SARS, cause much disruption in Pattaya / Bangkok / Thailand?

I think you may be kidding, but there may be some restrictions at airport entry..checks of some sort. Did they not have disinfectant type trays to walk through etc on the SARs outbreak?

Chinese govt, lying about the number of infected as usual. If there are 2 cases in Japan and 2 in Thailand there has to be many, many more infected than the Chinese "official" figures are saying. Worse still, is the haphazard way Chinese folk seek "cures", i.e using Chinese medicine as a "cure", then carrying on as normal,  travelling and socialising as if they are fine to do so, this could get bad. The world is overdue another bird flu epidemic, as mentioned, China's new mobility could be devastating, especially if it mutates.

Imperial College (top university in London) last week estimated 1.7K cases in China.

"Concerns expressed as 400 million people are expected to travel domestically and internationally during the upcoming lunar new year"

So far this new disease only bears close monitoring and I would definitely avoid flying any airlines originating or laying over in China. Also considering the large number of Chinese tourists and businessmen flying inter Asian flights these days,, I would cut back on those flights too. I remember a few years back sitting in a row directly behind a heavily coughing Chinese businessman on a flight from Manila to Jakarta, I caught his flu and was laid up a few days later.  So if you are in Thailand or about to visit, avoid all contact with anyone exhibiting flu like symptoms. and if you see a NE Asian guy coughing badly in a Go Go bar or restaurant - get the fuck out!

I would avoid flying Cathay Pacific flights like the plague...far too many "mainland" chinese like to transit through Hong Kong nowadays.
