Stock up on some alcohol in the nearest town before you visit the home, they love any excuse for a party. Don't worry too much about traditional Thai greetings etc. a simple wai to the elders will be sufficient. Remember that they expect you to be a bit "strange" in their eyes so just be yourself and try to join in and have a good time. Another tip is to plan a trip somewhere nearby, maybe into Udon Thani, it can get a bit hot and boring if you are stuck in the village all the time. Another idea is to book a nearby hotel to stay in before you turn up at the house, at least for the first night. They are bound to invite you to stay at their home for the night. if you don't like the idea you can say that you already have the hotel booked, if you like the idea you can stay with them on any subsequent nights.

There are no good hotels in Nong Bua Lampu your best bet would be to stay in Udon Thani lots of good accommodation there.

If you fly to Udon you could hire a car at the airport 1000 Baht per day and drive to Nong Bua Lamphu it's not that far but then again it is most likely she is from the province similar to what in the UK we would call a county so best you find out before get a map and get her to show you where she lives if you are within striking distance of Udon best if you stay there.

If you stay in the village you can expect to sleep on the floor shit in a hole in the ground throw a bucket of cold water over yourself for a shower and mosquitos, for one night it would be an experience after that you will be longing for a hotel with air con a proper bed bathroom and food.

I dont mean to put you off and I'm sure you will have a good time even staying in the village is ok once you get used to it but if you have never been before better to have a hotel to go back to at night.

In spite of what I have already said I would have no hesitation in saying you should go have a good time I am sure you will remember it for a long time.

Edit. I have just read my post it may not be that bad some aren't although most are just preparing you for the worst.

No probs mate then. just take care what you eat , They tend to all eat out of the same dish , You get a spoon and just dig in , That is if you can eat Thai, I Lived in the jungle for two three months with them , The only thing i could not get on with is just what i have told you , I use to watch granny with teeth like toumb stones and bad breath put her spoon in her mouth then she would pick over the food to find the best bits , Then its your turn after every body else has done the same , So take some falang food with you if you can, apart from thet you can just chill you will enjoy yourself , you will find the true Thai, Warm friendly and honest.

You can get by on eggs (fried & hard boiled) and fried rice, and pineapple for a few days. You could also buy yourself a few packs of those Thai pot noodles, like MaMa. Have fun.

If all goes Ok in another couple of years you will back in the village looking for a plot of land on the main road to build a house for your girlfriend.

Your girl or her parents will probably have at least one lockable cupboard or wardrobe at their house where you could stash some personal stuff if you do not want to carry it with you all the time. You should also be Ok locking it in your suitcase. But leave stuff lying round, not under lock and key, at your own peril. Village kids, or relatives, may pick up and start tampering with stuff that you do not lock away. On one of my early visits I found my electric shaver was a source of fascination for the kids, and returned to the house one time to find grandad having a go with it.

But don't let any of that put you off, it will all be part of the experience. Enjoy yourself.

Buy your own plate and utensils, I did.

Wash them yourself otherwise you might get sick I did. Mind you

the pet dog was drinking out of the washing trough. Take some food

in case you don't feel like eating the local fare, I ate both. Buy some presents

for the kids, cheap badminton set was a hit. Take plenty of bottled water.

Don't be afraid to laugh at yourself. Have a good time.

Ahhh man, no update to end that thread! was hoping for a happy ending! as i'm off into the unknown soon. Not a village (although her family do have on a farm somewhere) but Korat. Big city I know, but very different to Patts I understand.

As far as I can gather she has a normal lavvy! but does chuck tap water over herself and calls it 'shower' and no kitchen in her home! Met her on internet and talk with her regular via video thru messenger on her pc at home. She is great and I know her pretty well now ..but seriously ..fuck knows what to expect!!!!!!!

Life's too short!
