Restaurants, Food Outlets, opening and closing - UPDATES

End of an era, as Smokin' Joe's and Steak & Co change hands. Sold to a Korean/Japanese venture. Former owner Ian has taken out a lease on a Lengkee unit (photo), to be converted to a Western-style Chinese restaurant and takeaway, with delivery of course, under the 'Hungry Panda' name, and is looking at other potential investments around town. Good to see some money is still being spent in Pattaya and in Lengkee, which has been suffering of late..

EDIT - just to make it clear, SJ’s and S&C are NOT closing, as far as anyone knows so far it’s carrying on as normal under the new owners...

I hope it's not Indian. They have no future(if any restaurant has) in that spot.

Sorry if it’s been mentioned previously elsewhere but I just got turned away from retox soi lengkee in regards to no more food.

I know they recently stopped serving food before 4pm but I was told by the manager no more food being served at all as of yesterday :(

The restaurant Best Seats was closed due to declining interest of customers. After a kind of renovation the restaurant Wok and Grill opened a few weeks ago. As it is brightly illuminated it is not difficult to see if it is busy or not. So far I have hardly seen any customers inside....

T Shirt Warehouse, they have a shop on Soi Excite next to PA Bar, or have they moved to this location? They also do bar accessories, like bar mats etc, I know they have done some work for NW, like Envy Bar for example.

coming to third rd. between soi 10/1 (sometimes called soi sophon) and pattaya klang.

it would appear the Mods are branching out into the pub/restaurant trade

Both Subways in South Pattaya have closed.

Sam's Fast Food has replaced the one on Walking Street and Türkiyem Kebab has taken over the one on Pattaya Tai, close to the Bamboo Bar.

What do you expect when the cheapest half sub cost 95 baht....

Interesting Subway closed. Before they agree to they most expensive franchise , they send in surveyors to look at the location and see if its a viable business.  Guess even Pattaya is too tough for them

I never saw a need for them in Pattaya , plently of cheaper subsitutes made with the same stuff , most prob bought from the same supplier

Subway is closing restaurants faster than they're opening new ones. They have been in trouble for a number of years due to many factors. I think their primary reason is that they market themselves as a healthy place to eat, but that's simply false.

They claim that their food is fresh, but there have been a number of studies showing that they only get fresh vegetables once or twice a week. The last time I ate at one the lettuce was all wilted and limp. YUK!!

Highly processed preserved meats are not healthy in any way.

The only thing that’s really fresh is their bread.....but that's hardly healthy at all. The ingredients include highly processed flour with all of the healthy fiber and nutrients removed, and preservatives added.

I've often wondered how they could be successful in a country like Thailand where fresh, delicious food is widely available, cooked to order, and sold everywhere at really affordable prices.

A cold, limp, stale sandwich just can’t compare to a freshly cooked Pad Thai Goong, or equivalent, IMHO.

You forgot to mention jail bird Jarred....

Good point. For those who aren’t familiar with Jared Fogle....he was the American spokesperson for Subway for 15 years. He was morbidly obese at 425 pounds, and Subway used him as proof that eating their sandwiches could result in dramatic weight loss.

He lost 245 pounds on his Subway diet and remained their spokesperson and appeared in almost all of their advertising until he was accused and convicted of distribution and receipt of child pornography, and traveling to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor.

He's currently serving a sentence of between 13 to 15 2⁄3 years in federal prison, and faces a lifetime of supervision upon his release.

In addition he was ordered to pay a $175,000 fine plus forfeiture of $50,000 (a total of $225,000), and $1.4 million as restitution.

Although Subway got an awful lot of negative press because of Jared, I don’t think that it really had a huge impact on their bottom line. They were a company that really didn’t innovate or adapt to changing tastes at all, while the competition in that particular food arena really heated up.

I doubt that many customers decided to boycott Subway because of Jared's conviction. They were just serving mediocre food at premium prices.
