baa is for crazy.  nguu I would say it an incorrect transliteration of  โง่ which is more ng + oh.  nguu is more like the word for snake. โง่ translates to stupid.  mai chalad is 'not smart/intelligent' but does not mean stupid.

for the word crazy in Thai:

http://www.thai-language.com/id/131463#def3

for the word stupid in Thai:

for the word snake in Thai:

for the word smart/intelligent in Thai:

Transliterations are often inaccurate.  It helps if you learn the language directly from a teacher and also learn how to read it.

baa is a bit harsh, like baa baa bor bor - meaning crazy in the brain (in a bad way).

nguu or ngoh is hard for a non-Thai to pronounce as it is an 'ng' sound.

Far easier is to say Ting Tong (as in you have done something a bit silly) - Tong Ting is a play on these words as you have reversed them and so can be a softer way of saying someone has done something stupid (but is not totally brain damaged idiotic stupid).

Chalad is about intelligence, nothing to do with stupidity.

Your best chance of being understood is probably ไม่ฉลาด (Mai Cha-laat) Not smart. The more direct translation of stupid as above is more difficult to pronounce. Some other good suggestions above, it really depends on context.

I always say โง่ ngo but I would only use it in a jokey way.

โง่ ng-or - might be a bit rude, just depends to whom you're speaking and how you say it - but it does mean stupid.  The 'ng' sound in Thai is always hard (think of the '-ing' sound at the end of English words like going, stoping, coming, etc; and try and isolate the 'ng' at the end).  Another option might be 'Ehrr' - means stupid, but in a 'retarded' way.

*Thai tends to 'sound-off' the vowels, whereas English the consonants  -  so, when in doubt (or drunk) stress the vowels more when speaking Thai :)  (Or it sounds this way to me).

Here is a full list from the thai-language.com website.

http://www.thai-language.com/id/146249

Covers all the forms of stupid.  I wonder why the OP started the thread.  Does he want to call somebody stupid or want to know if somebody is calling him stupid?

The more advanced speakers (or people taking regular lessons) should get a kick out of this:

คุณรู้สึกว่าผมโง่เหมือนควายมั้ย。

ไม่ใช่เหมือนควายสองตัว。

kun rúu-sʉ̀k waa pǒm ngôo mʉ̌ʉan kwaai mái

mâi-châi! mʉ̌ʉan kwaai sɔ̌ɔng dtuua

Do you think I'm stupid like a Buffalo?

No! like Two Buffalo's!

Be warned though I wouldn't use these among Thai's, as "dem phrases be Fighting Words!"

I often hear Thaigirls refer to themselves as Ngi Ngao (งี่เง่า).

That's a new one for me. Goggle translate came up as "dumbass" for the meaning. That is my new favorite word.

My favorite one is มีหัวไว้คั่นหู mee hua wai kan hoo

which literally translates as “to have a head just to keep your ears apart” :D

Hehe, คันหู (notice the lack of the ' tone) while literally meaning "Itchy Ear" is slang for Horny after it was used in Ja Turbo's song of the same name eg

มึงคันหูเหรอ。

mʉng-kan-hǔu-rə̌ə。

Is your "ear" itchy?
