Taxi mafia. You'll have a hard time getting them to actually turn the meter on.

 

But, may be able to settle on a figure between 500-800 baht.

the taxis have meters but they will refuse to use them.  Last time I was there in 2015 it was a flat rate of 800 baht from the airport to Patong.  No haggling, no movement on price.

Agree with the above. Getting a taxi meter is very hard (but not impossible). I would say 1 in 7 would agree on turning on the meter. If it’s late, and the minibuses are no longer running (past 10pm), well.... then you’re just fucked. Taxis won’t turn on the meter, and they will try to fleece you for the highest price you’ll be willing to pay, based off of your desperation.  The other options are, having someone picking you up - or walking a VERY long distance in the dark.

800 is the normal mafia taxi rate hkt airport to Patong or vice versa. Make sure to have small bills, because they often seem to have no change, making it a 200 baht tip...

Curiously it’s only 600 baht going from Patong to the airport, yet still 1,300 baht if you book it as a roundtrip.

hotel quoted me 900 baht (going to airport), guy on the street with private car quoted me 800 baht.

You’ll have a hard time finding it cheaper than Phuket SRC Travel.
