Fuel tanker kills Italian couple
Published: 1/03/2019

CHUMPHON: An Italian couple was killed when a fuel tanker overturned and crushed their motorcycle at a junction in Muang district on Thursday evening. The truck driver blamed "faulty brakes".

Giuliano de Santis, 42, and his wife Ilaria Rizzo, 37, died when a six-wheeled PT Power Co truck rolled over at a three-way junction in Moo 8 village of tambon Pak Nam.

Fuel spilled from the overturned tanker and emergency crews sprayed the scene with water and foam, warning people to stay clear and not to smoke because it could cause an explosion.

It was about two hours before the truck could be safely lifted and the road reopened.

Eyewitnesses said the fuel truck was going fast, travelling downhill from Matsee mountain, and turned left into Chumphon-Pak Nam Road. At the same time, the tourists' motorcycle was crossing the junction from the right. The truck overturned onto its right side, landing on top of the motorcycle.

Truck driver Suriyan Nakbamrung, 64, said he had been in the job for a decade without such an accident.   He said the brake system of the truck malfunctioned and he could not slow down.

The Italians were being followed by four friends on two other motorcycles. Their friends were unhurt.

Poor buggers. So sad.

Life must be lived forward, but can only be understood backwards.

More chance to injure/die on road accident in Thailand  than your home country .   RIP .

I wish the video was not slowed down.

Did they really have no option of avoiding what was going to happen ?

Found the intersection on Street View (link).  The couple had an obstructed view coming up to the intersection. Using the timing mark on the video it looks like the truck covered an estimated 15m in 1 sec. That equates to a speed of 54 kph. I don't think the couple had a chance of avoiding that accident. Wrong place at the wrong time. RIP to them.

It’s a global requirement that companies transporting IMO cargo like this  is to be ISO 45001 certified with Implementation and continuous improvement of risk management plus legal compliance. I.e the breaks was to be checked before departure.

After living in Thailand its my understanding that Thais are good at switching blame and more often than not the it’s the foreign party that (in the end) gets blamed. In this case the driver is liable and should have derailed the truck and lost face rather than trying to make the turn.

RIP :Cry4:

So sad. Makes me think ... at the age of 42 or 37 when getting up in the morning, who would imagine that its his last day on earth? So many plans and ideas for the future ...

The difference between sex for money and sex for free is that sex for money usually costs a lot less.
