PrEP without consultation

Hi,

I went for consultation today and it seems like they are not really aware of PrEP here and strongly discouraged me from taking it. But I would be able to get the medicine without prescription.

So for those who take it what kind of tests have you done prior to starting? And had the doctors given any specific advice based on medical condition or history?

Tests before:

Full STD test

4th Generation HIV test

Hepatitis B

Kidney Tests.  Urine to check for Protein and Blood to check for Creatinine

Don't start if you have a flu like illness

One Month:

Full STD test

4th Generation HIV test

Kidney Test   Blood to check for Creatinine

Three Month:

Full STD test

4th Generation HIV test

Kidney Test   Urine to check for Protein

In England I had to get PrEP online, (different in Wales and Scotland) but the NHS were happy to provide all the testing and advised, informed and encouraged my decisions.   Recently there are studies being held and I am now receiving my PrEP for free.  I am straight and take PrEP for a six week period whilst I take a one month holiday.

This site is a good start.

I should also say, it is a good idea to get a Hep B Vaccination, as if you contract Hep B, stopping and starting PrEP has a small chance that your Liver will flare up.

This is also a very comprehensive guide.

@Mstn2014 Thanks for the help. Yes going to get the Hep B vaccination. I can only get the first and second shot before my next trip in April. But the doctor said I will still be protected before the third shot.

Not saying doctor is wrong, but I didn't have full immunity for Hep till after the last shot, 12 months after starting the course of injections. Maybe they mean you have some immunity, of course I guess every case is individual.

How would you know that?   Did you get blood tests(titters)?

Yes, I get tested 3 or 4 times a year, and when I started the hep course they tested my hep immunity each time (titters)

All you need to know about PrEP, and also for none gay.

If you don’t success at first, call it version one.

You need to make sure you don't have HIV before starting PREP, then get the regular 3 month tests

Finally got hold of Tenvir EM.

There is some confusion on dosage. It says on demand dosage is only for anal sex both top and bottom. For vaginal sex you have to have 7 day lead in time and have to only stop after 7 days of last encounter but it does not say if its only for females. I assume insertive anal sex is more prone to HIV than insertive vaginal sex and thus I'm not sure how on demand works better for insertive anal and not for insertive vaginal sex. Anyone care to explain?

They are referring to women for vaginal sex. You should double check for on demand dosing it assumes you already have a level of drug in your system i.e its repeated weekly
