How do you find all these codes/promo's? I will be arriving in 10 days

On the websites of the providers, though they’re not always easy to navigate.

Just look on the providers website. Most have an option to view the site in English.

I usually do the code thing on True, but I do it using the 300 baht tourist SIM card, which still ends up saving me tons of money compared to the tourist packages.

But I always assumed that in order to buy a regular sim you needed a Thai ID or something. So if I just go to the booth in BKK airport and ask for a regular sim, they will sell it to me no questions asked?

Easy to buy sim card at the airport.  It's best to have apple phone, card works instantly, with android, settings have to be adjusted.  Another option is the service providers in central mall.  The sim cards at the airport are usually cheap...so not many minutes, you'll have to top up.  The actual service providers can sell packages for days or weeks to fit your needs.  in any event, it's nice to have a working phone ASAP.

Sometimes they ask for passport and photo.  I usually keep extra passport photos available and a copy of passport for occasions like this...also in case you want to rent a motorbike.

Juxt to confirm. This is to buy a regular SIM card and not the Tourist SIM card?

I've had them ask for a passport for any type of sim card, tourist or otherwise.  The sales people just scratch out a few lines on a form, staple your picture, and write down your passport number.  they do just what's necessary to make the sale.

Too broad a question. What do you need?

It's worth noting that True have new (not particularly attractive) packages for SIMs activated after the 1st of Feb. Wherein they cap both the bandwidth and the data. (I wonder who thought of that one).

For example;

Quote

Unlimited internet
Maximum speed of 2 Mbps
4.5 GB in volume
When used up
Speed reduced to 128Kbps
At 23:59 hrs. Of the last day

* 900 * 8337# 160.5 baht

Not even the full seven days. This is the norm with TrueMove H and DTAC.

AIS gives you seven, twenty four hour periods.

So the new TrueMove H packs really aren't that attractive.

For  people who can order in advance, you can pick up SIMs with six months of data for 350(1 Mbps) to 500 baht(4 Mbps), so paying 300 baht plus for 8 days puts it all into perspective..

Just passport, no extra photo necessary for any SIM.

They likely only have Tourist SIMs at the airport, but just grab a 49 baht one there if you need a SIM straight away.

They might pretend they don't have them, in order to pressure you into buying something you don't need. Just smile and state "49 baht, thank you".

You can also purchase credit at the same time or pop across to the Family Mart for more flexibility in purchasing credit.

They all have 49 baht Tourist SIM. They just don't bother to tell you or they try to make them sound awful.

160.5 baht. Always include VAT in the figures to avoid disappointment

I've just arrived the other day and have done extensive research and attempts to get the unlimited plans. As BrainDrain mentioned, True seems to have got rid of the "unlimited data" plans. They technically are unlimited, but they slow down to a snails pace after a certain amount of GB usage.

The packages are still cheaper than what you can get at the airport, however still are not a great option anymore for anyone who is looking to use data for things like streaming. Unfortunate.

How can I get that AIS package?

I just bought it in Pattaya.

Any family mart or the AIS Shop on the basement level of Central Festival Mall - Beach Road end.

You buy a basic SIM then add the above "on-top" package.

They charge me 150 B per week and I just have the basic call package when not in Pattaya - ie so no calls = no charge while I'm in my own country.

Before leaving Thailand to go home I top my account up to keep the SIM current - you can extend it up to 12 months on a rolling basis - just ask at the AIS shop and they'll show you how to do it.

Good luck.

Well they just deduct 150 B per week from my AIS account while I'm in Pattaya - no VAT so don't really know what the go is there.

The website just shows 150 B as well ?

Thanks. Is there a code so I can do it myself, or should I go to the AIS store and ask in person?

There are codes which I could look up - but I'd recommend just going to AIS in Central Festival. They speak good english and know how it works.

1) you need a basic SIm - small cost not sure of the exact amount.

2) You'll need your passport/ photo ID

3) Ask for the 150 B unlimited on top package @ 4 Mbps - 7 days

4) Get them to set up English language etc

5) If you want to keep the Sim active for next trip ask them to show you how. It involves topping up your AIS account 20 B or 50 B multiple times on a machine similar to an ATM. Every 20/50 B extends the Sims validity date.

Once they show you its simple.

6) Leave a bit of money in your AIS account for next time - if you want.

7) set up a password on your phone app makes it easier. Also you can then access your account via PC etc when back in your home country.

Hope that helps.

I just left the AIS store. Bad news. It seems AIS has also gone the way of True. All of the packages are no longer unlimited full speed. Meaning they also drop speeds once you use up certain amounts of GB.
The person at AIS did know of the 150 baht package but explained the packages had changed. So I know there wasn’t a misunderstanding.
These changes all happened in the past week or so. So I guess that would mean Zeb, that either you are grandfathered in somehow, or your next bill will be with the new data limit.

The good news however is that dtac still has fully unlimited non-stop speed packages. At very good prices too. I just got a SIM card for 49 baht and signed up for 24 hrs to test out the speed. So far it seems perfectly good. YouTube videos stream without any loading time or hiccups. I’ll be going back tomorrow to pay for the 30 day.

Sorry that wasn’t entirely true. Forgot to add that AIS does still have one truly unlimited package but it’s for 30 days only and it’s about 1500 baht, so not exactly cheap.
Also, this is all info I’ve gathered from speaking to multiple representatives, but If I’m wrong about any of this I apologize and feel free to correct me.

They show prices exclusive of VAT. Some people claim that they aren't charged VAT...I won't argue with them.

You missed the point. New SIMs registered from the 1st of February go on to the new plans described by West.

So keep your old SIM alive. ;)

No need to visit them to apply the package; http://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/products/net-no-limit.html

4 Mbps 535 baht *104*389*9#

10 Mbps 695.50 baht *104*597*9#

Prices quoted inclusive of VAT.

Of course one should choose the 10 Mbps(1.25 MB/s) pack if you're into Netflix HD.

I’ve paid for the 30 day package from dtac now. I did it in person and didn’t use the code, but the code should work just as well.

Worth noting that if you choose to do it in person, it matters which store you go to. I first tried at the Central Festival dtac store and the guy was very insistent that the 30 day 10mbps package didn’t exist. He even showed me their printout page of packages which indeed showed every package of length/speed, except the one I wanted. He was either a good liar or truly didn’t know about it.
After that I simply went back to the Central Marina mall dtac, and it was no problem. Their printed page of packages does show it. Not sure why the stores have different things.

Long story short, anyone looking for unlimited data packages from now on - look into dtac.

  • 3 weeks later...

Dumb question, but they have these SIM card outlets at Don Mueang

I just want a card to make phone calls to Australia, that dtac 299 B card should be sufficient for my needs

I can use hotel wifi if i need the net...
