So's Place on Soi 15 behind The Avenue

Recommended Posts

Sorry to say but I was massively disappointed with this place.

Went for the first time to try a different Thai Restaurant. Ordered Penang Moo, one of my favourite Thai dishes. Im no expert but i know what makes a good Penang. No body and depth of flavour. Like it was a coconut soup with the slightest bit of red curry paste. Watery. The pork was pre-cooked and added to the dish as well. It wasnt the thinly sliced pork but chuncky pieces which I normally wouldnt mind but when you fished them out of the soup they had no flavour.

Best Penang i had was from the Thai Restaurant at Swan Bar and hotel on Soi 4 in Bangkok. Its variable but never disappointing.

Maybe I ordered the wrong dish or expected too much from a Cheap and Cheerful. But Come On. Its Penang Moo and this is Thailand. I can make better at home. Bummer.

Robx Out.

So's place with the blue sign avoided the wrecking ball which was busy to the right hand side of this pic....................

I asked about that at So's.  The area that got leveled is owned by a different landlord, so So's seems safe.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but inconsistency is a problem for nearly all restaurants in Pattaya.  On my next visit to So's, I will order the Penang moo to see if you had an unfortunate one-off meal or if it is indeed a bad dish.  I'll include pics of what I get.

Thanks for the gesture. I realise experiences, standards and individual tastes do differ.

I also should have taken a photo but didnt.

Thanks,

Robx.

Thanks for a great report (as usual) Evil.

The food looks good and authentic. But the portions seem a bit small for me.

I really like Thai Kitchen just a little up form Centara hotel. Also cheap, quick and authentic. It maybe a tad more expensive but the portions there are just the right amount food for me.

I ate here a couple of times on my recent trip. It was great. Thanks Evil Penevil I wouldn't have gone here otherwise.  Friendly staff reasonable prices and tasty. I should have read the initial post more thoroughly, because walked on by with the too loud music, to have a relaxing meal on the Monday. But there was more relaxing music on the nights I was there. The saxophonist and and an acoustic guitar player another night.  Spring rolls, and green curry below.

The only time I would not stop there for a meal is when the band is playing on a Monday night.  Nothing wrong with the band, its me that just can not stand the volume!   Food has always been good and the staff are really friendly even from the first visit there.

To my knowledge , all food is cooked to order , however, some sauces may be prepared.... So, as well as Rick, speak English , so you shouldn't have a problem getting your requests understood.

I am not ting tong...my mother had me tested.

That is true....in most restaurants the soup and curry pastes are pre-prepared...so no sugar is out for things like

tom yam etc

Might have a chance with items like omelettes...i know for a fact that the stuffed omelettes have sugar in the stuffing.

An old standby, but very good the way it's done at So's.  Chicken with cashews at 150 baht.

Another good meal at So's.  I was hungry last night, so I had a big bowl of pork noodle soup for 80 baht:

followed by garlic fried spare ribs at 145 baht.  The ribs were meaty and tender, while the sliced garlic had been fried crispy without any burning.  With rice and a bottle of water, the meal cost 280 baht in all.

Thanks to Evil (again, for up to date reviews). The last two posts made me drool (getting to that age I suppose).

Will definitely visit So's later in the month when I return.

I think earlier this year I stopped in.  I walk past there frequently as it lies between home and a regular drinking hole.  So this night I am walking home and it starts pissing down.  I mean like only SE Asia can rain.   I've been in before and like the owners and staff so I pop in there.

I start chatting with this nice young brit.  And I've been in Thailand long enough and known enough brits I've gotten OK at detecting where they are from but he had me baffled.  So I gave up and asked him.  Long story short he is a Geordie.  I was gobsmacked.  So I ask him why I am having no trouble understanding him as a yank normally has no chance.  He says "because in thailand I talk REALLY slow".  had me in stitches.  Probably funnier in person.  :D

A Geordie  / Newcastle accent can be pretty difficult for for the rest of us English people to understand at times :)

Looks delicious! That said; the same dish can be had at the food market, at soi Buakhao for 89 baht.

When does this place close

It closes at midnight, but the last food order is taken at 10.30 p.m., if I remember right.

I stay in the avenue residence and spend a lot of time at So's with So,Rick and Reg.

Great place to have a chat, cold beer and a bite.

The Geordie is a great friend of mine and yes he does speak slowly to non Brita, if somebody listened to us talking together, it would probably be incomprehensible.

So's is a good option if you have occasion to take a Thai family out to dinner.  A friend from the U.S. had his GF's two children and parents on a visit and asked me about a restaurant to take them for a meal.  The parents never eat farang food and wouldn't feel comfortable in a fancy Thai restaurant.  So's fit the bill, especially since it was close to where they were staying.

The total cost for the meal for seven people (eight dishes ) was 1,500 baht with tip and drinks, including six bottles of beer.  The family was happy with the food and he was happy with the price.

The other night I had a great bowl of what's called Chinese noodle soup on the menu.

IMG_0002---Copy1.jpg.6a93193748b9495d2cf12abfde806c29.jpg

It comes in several different versions (chicken, pork and seafood).  I took the one with pork.  It was very tasty with fresh ingredients and an excellent broth.

The cook sure didn't skimp on either the noodles or the pork.  It was a filling meal for 80 baht.  The seafood version (shrimp and squid) costs 120 baht.

Changes are underway at So's and I'll update this thread when they are official.
