Pattaya-

A total of 477 road accidents were reported on Wednesday, the first day of the so-called seven dangerous days of Songkran, killing 39 people and injuring 461 others, the Road Safety Centre announced.

Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat told the media at the center that an estimated 40 per cent of the accidents were caused by drink driving. He said around 82 per cent involved motorcycles with long, straight, major roads more likely to see crashes. Most accidents happened from 4pm to 8pm, the minister added.

Day  2  of holiday , 60 dead and  over 600   injured ,  nationwide of course,  usual  motorbikes  biggest offenders , and  drinking ,sad.

Took the dog for a walk about midnight. Drunk Thai was going on about killing Americans and then jumped on a maotorbike sans helmet and no lights. He could hardly stand and before he took off pissed all over his own bike.

As much as I love all things Australian, I got to get me action of the asian persuasian.

Soi competiveness during Songkran then .......

According to the 2013 WHO figures of 24,237 deaths in LOS, the first 2 days are below average.

Yesterday lots of young thais racing around no helmet beach road and around Soi 8 area, I'm amazed if no serious accident there yet

People never learn that drinking and driving are  like water and oil they dont mix to well, but there is always a few that think they are lucky and will get home hammered and crash the sad part is the innocent bystanders that die due to stupid drunks driving.

Read that nearly 60,000 drivers were arrested yesterday for drunk driving.

Yeah but what they get for that? next day they are out with a small fine "thats even if they get a fine" and next big holiday they will do the same shit al over again. Now if they did serious time or pay a big fine then next time they would think twice.

On new year eve , I was almost hit by a drunk Thai motorcyclist at soi buakhao . I have seen few Thai motorcyclist text messaging on phones while riding along , also have seen few fathers  & mothers riding on motorbike  with helmet on but had child with NO helmet .. WTF ..

I agree with you about the low fines and easy offs most of the time, but the article I read did also say they confiscated several hundred vehicles, that the owners could not get back until after Songkran.  I deleted the article so cannot quote the actual numbers, but saw another that doubled that arrest quote on Day 2.

Thanks for the link.  My wife cannot stand the way that motorcycle drivers weave between cars in the U.S.  Guess, it’s everywhere.  Thanks for the info.

Some country's worse than others, for example Republic Dominican wow they drive like bats out of hell, while driving a car you really need to pay alot of attention or someone will crash into you or you into them, its out of this world the day they drive motorcycles there.

Wait Wait, is this more or less than the daily average. I'm thinking average.
