BKK Departures - allow sufficient time

Featured Replies

Here's a reminder to everyone to make sure that you get to the airport at least two hours before your flight departs as it took me well over 90 minutes from the time I was dropped off at the terminal to the time I got to the gate.  I don't think it was an unusually busy period but I saw quite a few people who were trying to jump the queue as their flights were close to departing.  There were long lines everywhere and a lot of waiting.

I don't fly 6000 miles to drink singha for two weeks, what I care about is the girls in bed with me.

Swampy really is simply a monumental fuck up of a airport.

What time was your flight?

Use the VIP service, takes a lot of the hassle out of the airport, especially for arriving.

They all are, LHR is worse, so is JFK and HKG. Have you been to Manila lately?

HKG is a breeze. LHR i shit house. I usually have the fast track immigration tickets for most places though. Especially BKK where one look at that cluster fuck off an immigration system gives me the creeps.

Its advised to arrive at the airport 3 hours before an international flight

Swampy is no worse and a lot better than some airports. I always allow plenty of time to get through security and passport control.

I got to swampy at about 7am and it was a breeze,I think it really depends on the time you arrive at the airport.

Better to pay for a fantasy than lose to an illusion

Really, i think its a nice modern airport!

Never had a problem even with the old one after 46 trips, always book my taxi from Pattaya 4 hours before departure and now with good motorway it's normaly takes my taxi between 70 and 80 minutes to reach door number 7 for check in which i now do online anyway. Some airlines open check-in earlier than others do Etihad for me straight to check-in no queue's, Qatar always seems to be long queue's.

I always make sure i arrive minimum of 3 hours prior to departure. Check in online bags off and into lounge

Cannot for the life of me understand guys and girls arriving 90 minutes before the off deliberately when any delay means its game over. You're going home thats bad enough why add additional stress

Is there a VIP service available for leaving swampy?  A faster way to get through passport control? And security?

Maybe they are still enjoying themselves while you are stressing yourself out to leave early.

Everyone is different, you don't need to understand then.  If it makes you happy to leave early, good for you.

Yes.

Having said all that, I think AOT or whosoever is responsible should man more immigration booths at BKK departures, even though there is provision for a 2 officer operated booth I rarely ever see 2 IO's working simultaneously.

I flew out of BKK in February (late night) & it was pathetic manpower planning, very long queues after security clearance.

Thankfully, they actually understood the potential mess & a lady IO started to divert passengers to a temp booth behind the main ones.

Its bound to get messy for late night departures with flights leaving for all the major European & Chinese cities. Don't need a masters in man power planning to address that.

................................................................................................................

it took me nearly an hour and a half to check my bags and get through customs last week, not great but thats life.

No I arrive "on time" at the 3 hour point that every airlines states. If I have been in Thailand 2-3 months (frequently) am quite capable of controlling myself for the last 60-90 minutes

No, you arrive at the time that suits your personality.

The rest of us are still enjoying our holiday.

Your statement of every airline stating three hours is just nonsense. Airlines are more likely to state two hours. If you check-in on-line you usually have to drop your bag off at least an hour beforehand.

For instance, American Airlines advises passengers to be at the airport two hours before flight time for international departures and 90 minutes for domestic flights. Also, there's an exception for flights to certain overseas destinations, which require that you check in earlier.

United Airlines further complicates this issue by adding luggage to the equation. If you're not checking luggage, the carrier advises you to arrive at the airport at least 60 minutes before your scheduled departure time. If you're checking luggage, it's 90 minutes. For international flights, give yourself two hours, says United.

It's nice that you feel like you "can control yourself".  Others can also control themselves and enjoy themselves at the same time.

So do what makes you happy and don't be so quick to judge others.

Agree, if they purposely leave things late and then get delayed en route to the airport and miss their flight, then its their own fault, not much sympathy tbh!

It can also happen to people who allow plenty of time too, thats just rank bad luck.

You chaps should try arriving at Kyiv International Airport (Zhuliany) which is Kiev’s 2nd airport. Small plane load of say 150 people and they may if you’re lucky place a 2nd passport control person on duty. Add to the mix the fact that ‘Ruskie’ people aren’t too good at queuing and you’ll often find yourself much further away from the control booth than you were 30 minutes earlier. :/

I like Swampy as they have the fast track for seniors, one benefit for getting old.

What’s the cut off age for seniors?
