Mosquitos in Thailand

Featured Replies

I've been to Thailand 5 times now and the first three times i visited were all during christmas times.

Every time i visited i had HUGE issues with mosquito bites.. I got stung ALOT and reacted very bad to the bites. They started swelling up alot and the itching was killing me.

Now the two last visits, i came during august and all of a sudden my dredded mosquito situation was turned on its head.. Now i didnt get stung alot, and the bites i did get i reacted very little to. Just  a small lump, and no itching.

Has this something to do with season which i visit? Maybe the rain season? Or did I just get lucky these last two visits?

(PS: yes i did use mosquito repellent all the time offcource)

seems the more times you visit the less you get bothered, can be a pain the first day or 2 but get some alcohol in your system and they seem to leave you alone

I have been to Pattaya 10 times from 05 till 2011 and never remember seeing a mosquito.

Zyrtec fixes it very quickly. I'm allergic to mosquito bites and come up in bumps the size of a £1 coin

Been to Pattaya 45 times and Mosquito's love it when i come back I'm easy pickings that is until i came across Mosquito Milk i am never without it now when i come back Pattaya it's a life saver for me , must have been using it for well over 5 years it's expensive but it's also the best. 2 roll-on's last me the hole month's holiday I'm never without it and that reminds me must order some more for my May/June trip/

Just Google Mosquito Milk.

Another very good mossi repellent is one called Jaico.  Comes in a roll on bottle, more expensive than some but lasts a lot longer.  If you apply early evening it will work for the rest of the day and maybe longer.  I have been using this one for over thirty years and swear by it, I wouldn`t use anything else, it also doesn`t smell like some of them do.

I've always used the repellent from 7/11 and found it very effective but smells very flowery. Found one in the local pharmacy called Sketolene, lasts for 7 hours and has a mild citronella perfume. 100 Baht.

I never get bitten in Pattaya, but just spent a week in Koh Tao on a side trip and the mozzies there are savages.

I buy the same from 7/11. Comes in different scents. Uses citronella as the repellent. A couple of sprays on my feet and ankles before I go out gives me a night's worth of protection. Since they're small bottles I always keep one in a pocket too.

Apparently the female only bites when she's ovulating or something, moody lot, some days in the same street food restaurant they bite, other days nothing. I carry the 7-11 one if I'm eating around 5pm.

Apparenty these also work, Johnson baby lotion, pink one, from 7-11 or dettal shower gel

My female only bites when she's on the rag. Very moody! 555

Are you guys applying it during the day or just at night, most seem to say 4 hours repellent..

Dengue is the only worry. Dawn and dusk is when they bite. Not that common, the room is the biggest risk, i often play hunt the mosquito before they play bite the farang

I don't bother during the day, just in the early evening hours when they're most active.

Funny enough after the heavy rain, a load of mosquitoes out where I've just eaten. Need repellent from the knee down, they mainly go for the feet

This is the best one in Thailand in my opinion..... And i've tried them all

I always use the citronella-based repellent on my legs when I go out in the evening to hang out at outside beer bars.  I think it works well enough.  Sure, the DEET types are more effective, but I don't want that stuff on my body on a regular basis.

+1   for this off . Must be popular as I often find it out of stock in the few places its available .  One can lasts me a week  @ 137 baht roughly

Back in the loom during the night, turn on the A/C as high as you can tolerate. The mosquitos shutdown in the cold and are unable to move or fly around and thus will generally not bite you.

The mosquitos in Pattaya don't seem to bite during the night, seems to be dawn and dusk and they're strict with that. I know that as i usually have a couple in my room and they do nothing night time.

Anyone got experience to the contrary?
