Malaria Drugs verse Sunburn

Featured Replies

BM's,

Got advised by my doctor to take Doxycycline....bought them and was warned about sunlight at the chemist. I've been to Thailand a few times and never taken it. I'm more worried about sunburn as I'm light skinned. I'm only going to Pattaya no rural areas....any advice?

You coming to Pattaya for a few weeks and want to take anti-malaria drugs ? That have side-effects.

Sounds like over-cautiousness to me.

Mosquito bites can be annoying, but a 7-11 spray keeps them away I find.

But I am not a doctor.

Yes mate only two weeks, like I said I've never taken before. Just was wondering if there was a big chance of it in Pattaya. Might just bring some mossie spray.

Nurse/Doctors tend to be over the top with what they recommend. Pattaya you don't need anti malaria, much more likely to get Dengue, so take precautions for that. My nurse recommended Rabies. If i was you I'd take PrEP

I've never found them an issue , avoid wearing shorts at night if you don't want to be bitten , wouldn't worry about malaria in Patts but every local convenience shop sells spray if you need it

If it floats, flies or fucks It's probably cheaper to rent ...

Try to avoid putting your balcony light on also, that  attracts all sorts, I've hardly been bit in Pattaya but other parts of Los I've had a few.

I thought about PrEP but I won't be on the receiving end of anal. Thought chances on HIV slim as I intend on wearing condoms. As for rabies hadn't given it a thought,

Malaria is probably the least likely thing you'll catch

I have lived here for over 8 months now before that I came here 27 times, been up country a few times. never taken anti malaria drugs. Thailand is not a big risk country.

I took anti malaria tablets back in the early 90s stopped taking them as made me feel like shit

There is NO malaria whatsoever in Pattaya. If you need a specific citation, then according to the US CDC, Malaria in Thailand is found...

Quote

Primarily in provinces that border Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, and Laos, and  the provinces of Kalasin, Krabi (Plai Phraya District), Nakhon Si Thammarat, Narathiwat, Pattani, Phang Nga (including Phang Nga City), Rayong, Sakon Nakhon, Songkhla, Surat Thani, and Yala, especially the rural forest and forest fringe areas of these provinces.  Rare to few cases in other parts of Thailand including the cities of Bangkok, Chang Mai, Chang Rai, Koh Phangan, Koh Samui, and Phuket.  None in the islands of Krabi Province (Koh Phi Phi, Koh Yao Noi, Koh Yao Yai, and Ko Lanta) and  Pattaya City.

Don't bother to take malaria phrophylaxis unless you go to one of the heavily forested border areas.

I think Doxycycline can be used for Gonhorrea so maybe hang on to them

Googled it, can prevent syphilis  and it treat's chlamydia and most cases of gonhorrrea. Think I'd still head to the dick doctor first anyway.

Whilst I'm not a ranga, I still burn rather easily......yep slip, slop, slap. I tend to get around in singlets so taking something that makes you burn easier is something that I need to weigh up.

I used them in afghan for 6 months that exact antibiotic. I never suffered from sun burn, just make sure you use a good factor tan lotion and you'll be golden

Ive heard of people getting maleria, or something similar, but it is rare,,,,

no body likes to get the itchies... I got bit so bad once at a beach in chumpon, that both my feet swole up double,

I was lethargic, and my shoes were difficult to wear... it was not fun, but I survived

Been going to Pattaya for more than 30 years and never had any problem there at all with malaria or heard of any problems.   Have lived for over 7 years in a jungle surrounded area on the border with Kalasin, Sakon Nakon and Udon Thani and even in this area never heard of one case of malaria!   Anti malarial drugs are not cheap and you only get them in the UK with a private prescription or a travel clinic so check first if you really need them.   Also the last time, admittedly long time ago, that I took Malarone I was quite badly affected for a couple of days, could not stand without getting dizzy and fell over one time.

Checking with our countries health page (it's in Dutch so I'll paraphrase), there are no known issues with malaria south of Chaing Mai. Chaing Rai has has more recent incidents, but they're not exceptional and Pattaya is so far south of these areas it shouldn't be a consideration. Even the south of Thailand, Krabi et al, doesn't rate a "boo" in the current reports.

Relax. Put on skeeter repellant if you must, but just relax.
