What's your go to treatment for a common cold in Thailand?

I somehow managed to get a nasty summer cold on the morning of my flight to Bangkok. I'm on day 2 of my vacation in Pattaya, and I still feel pretty lousy. My basic symptoms are sore throat, coughing, runny nose, earaches, and sneezing.

Obviously there's no cure for the common cold, but I'm wondering if any of you have a preferred method of dealing with a cold while mongering. My hotel (Mera Mare) doesn't have a sauna or steam room. I haven't boozed it up too much yet, but maybe I should switch from beer to whiskey to help with my sore throat. I've also been drinking a lot of fresh squeezed oj.

Sure, that's the reason why you buy tissues at home...

Do sauna/steam rooms seem to help? Something I've never tried, but have read suggestions it can help, particularly if done early on.

Lots of sleep is my go-to option, but that's a terrible option if you're on a short trip.

Welcome and introduce yourself in the proper section.

Best thing for a common cold is obviously don't over exert yourself. Rest as much as possible and take some medication as needed to alleviate symptoms of body pain, headaches, etc. Keep taking in fluids and hot soups.

Don't monger until you feel recovered, not only for your sake but for the girls too. Not very nice to get a girl sick because you wanted to monger before your body was recovered.

Same as home? Treat the symptoms with ibuprofen and otrivin and wait for the autoimmune system to kill the virus infection.

My go-to would involve plenty of rest/sleep, plenty of water, stay off the alcohol altogether, and stay out of the heat. Also try and keep the aircon off - those things can be terrible and exacerbate how you feel.

You know that, we know that - but Thai pharmacists will tell you differently and you walk out with about 12 packets of different pills they managed to sell you.

No miracle cure sadly. Keep hydrated and take paracetomols and wait for it to pass..until you get the next one. I've tried 1000mg Vit C but no noticeable improvement.

I would avoid Ibuprofen, not in your case, but some flu symptoms can be dengue fever and ibuprofen will make it worse

Thais suck at cold remedies .. I always take a few sachets of lemsip because the aircon / hangovers always gives me a bit of a cold at some point.

Similar to my treatment.  I also add in Prednisolone eyedrops 2 or 3 times a day.  It doesn't cure anything, but it fights the swelling in your sinuses as your eye sockets drain into your sinuses.  It puts the meds right on the spot they are needed to give you some relief.

As we all know, no real cure, but the ibuprofen also backs down the fever, and a lot of what makes you FEEL sick is your body reaction to the fever.

I would also suggest a good spa treatment daily, without the extras.  Be kind to the ladies for a few days.  But do let them massage out some of the soreness the fever is bringing on.  OH, and let them know you have a little cold, so you don't get the little peck on the cheek. (or the tongue down the throat!)

Tiffy two hours before bed. Nyquil immediately before bed.

Have not seen Nyquil available in Thailand ... could you refer a pharmacy that would have it ?

I spend half my money on hookers and booze ,the other half I waste.

Tiffy is your best bet. N.B. You can not buy aspirin in LOS. Actifed and other sinus meds are also off limits because they can be used to make yaba or other naughty drugs.

Best to bring your home remedies with you to Thailand.

The wife and I were very happy for 20 years, then we met.

Brought mine from home... but if you access the website the local chemist can offer a very close alternative

People always mention Tiffy but it does nothing for me

Definitely don't ask pharmacies for recommendations! My girl was feeling ill and went to buy meds - she came back 'prescribed' with 6 different pills - one to fix dizzy, one for stuffy nose, one for cough, one for headache, one for fever, and diphenhydramine

Can't cure a common cold...but just like a fart in Thailand, it's not always what you think.

Used to think I kept getting colds but it was actually a recurring sinus infection I eventually got rid of with antibiotics.

Yes, for "SYMPTOMS" of the common cold, sometimes Tiffy works for the sinus and sometimes Robitussin for the cough.  Drink plenty of fluids (non-alcohol).  As mentioned by many, if you go to a Thai pharmacy, they will sell you many other stronger options.  Sometimes, some work as it'll depend on what truly ails you so sometimes they are worth a try.  Keep warm and hydrated.

For prevention, on the flights i keep warm, wash my hands regularly, wear a face mask and keep hydrated.  Upon arrival, especially into a hotel room, make sure the air con filters have been cleaned. Keep warm and hydrated.

If you're on holiday, we know it'll be difficult, but try to get some rest each day, wash your hands frequently and drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids :).

Take care of yourself, but better yet find a LT that can make you comfortable - buy you soups, water, foods and give you a massage :).

Apart from the ' plenty of water' none of the above are very conducive to a mongering holiday in Pattaya.

One of the brews that I often use for a cold is a homeopathic treatment.

chopped up ginger and garlic, with honey and Lemon brewed up in a pot of boiled water. I usually amaze a batch in a large coffee plunger. It will make you sweat and pong! Garlic comes out through your pores. Helps me get over a cold.

best of luck. You may need to find a friendly sympathetic TG to look after you.
