Hi Mate, I don't have a great amount of experiences with Thai hospitals apart from an upper respiratory problem some years back but I would urge you not to discount the wait in Australia, under Medicare, for this type of operation. Don't be a silly billy as it is a fairly major operation and could require some lengthy recuperation at the bad end of the spectrum.

I have had total knee replacements for both legs although not done at the same time. I also do not consider it a wise move to have both knees done at the same time however I know of a lady visiting the specialist the same time as me that had both done together. Whilst attending phsio at the public hospital one man also attended post op and his leg was turning black and he was promptly advised to get back to his doctor.

I don't know if you are resident in Thailand. If so my advice may not assist but all the best anyway. Sorry for the late reply but have not read this section much.

About seven years ago I had hip replacement surgery in Melbourne. I had top cover on BUPA health insurance. Gross cost was about $A32,000: nett cost to me after Medicare and BUPA was was about $A3,000.

I did check costs in Thailand. As I recall, a package of surgery, hospital and rehab home for two weeks was available but I forget the cost. The important thing to know is that no Australian health insurance benefit - Medicare or private insurance - is payable; the hospital, surgeon etc must be Oz-registered.

If i was going to Thailand for such a procedure Pattaya would not be on my list, I suspect you will find the hospitals in Bangkok, Chiangmai, chang rai and udon Thani better choices as the hospital in Pattaya is quite small. There is a lot of good information on thai visa concerning the various doctors and hospitals, i don't see why you should have problems Thailand has good private hospital's so i don't see the problem with that
