My buddy has this Non O visa and I think he's missing out on extending it...

So I have a good friend, who is still employed in the USA, but is very near retirement.  He was formerly working abroad for several years and is married to a Thai lady.

He entered Thailand on this visa which was issued to him months back.

He is there on vacation, but he has not acted to extend this visa in any way, which I think will be a mistake on his part as he will not be back in Thailand before this visa goes beyond 1 year.

Does the M indicate this is a multi-entry?

What must he do to get another year of validity on this visa?

He is wealthy, but has not placed money into his Thai account for the required two months.  Also US Embassy appointments have about a 2 week lead time, and he is now too close to his departure date to get a income letter from the Embassy.  Would he need either to extend this visa?

What's the best move for him so as not have to go thru the headache of getting another Non O-A?

He can go to cambo or Vietnam or some other close (or not so close) by country, and re enter Thailand prior to OCT 11 and get another 12 month permission to stay....

And yes, the M means muli entry

He only entered Thailand about one month ago (July 1, 2017), but now he has to go back to work in the USA and likely will not retire until Feb of 2018.  Is there some way he can prevent this visa from expiring so that he can use it in March 2018?  Or did he already achieve a 12 month extension of this visa based on his July entry?  Clearly his plans are not to stay in Thailand now, but come later.

If he leaves and re enters before OCT 11 he will get another 12 months permission to stay.  So if he entered OCT 10, he would be good thru to OCtober 9 2018. and then towards the end of that 12 months permission to stay, he could apply for the retirement extension after meeting the financial requirements.

But because the visa expires OCT 11, if he leaves and comes back after OCT 11 his visa will be no good to re enter.

Thing to remember with visa dates, they are the dates that you may enter the country, in this case any time between OCT 12 2016 and OCT 11 2017.. outside those dates the visa is just a sticker....

So, when he leaves, his current 12 month  permission to stay will be voided. And as there is no live visa/or live visa extension, in his passport to return in FEB/MAR 2018,  a  new visa would be required.

However.............  he doesn't need to be retired to be granted a retirement extension.. IN THAILAND... He will have to satisfy the financials.. and age requirements but by what you say, he doesn't have the money in the bank as yet... nor the time to season it.. if he has 3 more weeks or so in country there may be a way....

Otherwise...

I think he may be snookered....
