Enough of that ---- I hired a car for $30 a day and got a 1.5l Malaysian built vehicle that was pretty good actually and considering my itinerary it was a good move really.

First destination --- Matang Wildlife Centre

https://sarawaktourism.com/attraction/matang-wildlife-centre/

It is an Orangutan Adoption centre and much less visited than Semmengoh so well worth a visit. Takes about 30 mins to drive there on really good roads and Google navigation works well. We were one of about 6 people visiting when we went.

Next day a trip to Damai Beach

A resort town on the coast where the sea is pretty flat and muddy due to the amount of rivers flowing in. You can stay out here as well but it takes about 40 mins to drive here

Had a nice lunch on the seafront

Dinner at Top Spot seafood plaza

Situated on the top floor of a car park it is about a dozen food outlets specializing in fresh seafood. People from all over South East Asia come here just for the seafood.

Medan Fern - a local delicacy

Cat Museum

Kuching, or Cat City, has cat statues everywhere and most are pretty kitsch. Up at the town hall is the Cat Museum which is worth an hour or so time

Bako National Park

https://sarawaktourism.com/attraction/bako-national-park/

About 45 mins drive from Kuching you reach the park entrance at a small town primarily populated by fishermen and their families and seems very popular for locals and visitors to buy cheap fresh seafood. You also catch the boats from here to the National Park - they start from about 7am and I think the last boats back are 4pm. You head out the river into the South China sea ( which can be rough so check the weather ) and after about 15 mins ride you get to the Park headquarters.

I went here to look for proboscis monkeys but it was risky cos you have the best chance early morning or dusk so to have a better chance you should stay overnight out there - a range of accomodation and food etc is available. I have some pics of Proboscis from a visit to Sabah that I may add so you can see what they look like.

The GF stayed at the hotel which was a good thing in the end. The track I took was one of the better to see Proboscis but it was thru stinking hot jungle all over the track and hard work.

The track was hot, humid and steep in places so good shoes would be better than my thongs
