I'm going to stick my neck out here but why not call Thai Airways and ask them?

I sat next to an old bloke on the Syd-bkk leg, he said he always booked the cheapest avail econ seat and asked at the counter for upgrade.

Syd-bkk if I recall correctly he said was roughly $400.

So possible if there is space, not sure what the cost would be ex UK.

He said it is successful 9/10 flights...

Yes you can if it's available, mind you the last time I traveled Thai airways I had a whole row of seats to myself felt like business class.

Me no daft, me no silly, me wear condom on my Willy.

Did it a year ago. Bangkok to London already had an economy class ticket and paid £600 or thereabouts to upgrade to business. Thai business is fine - not as good as Etihad but a vast improvement on economy

Oh forgot to mention. They would only let me upgrade on the day of the flight. I called them about a week before and they told me to ask as I checked in. I guess they hang on to the last minute hoping to sell business class seats at the full price.

I think with most premium airlines will give you an upgrade if you have accumulated a few air miles but I would imagine not impossible for others depending how you are dressed. (they will not upgrade you to business class dressed in shorts and a T-shirt)

Recently I usually fly with budget airlines as they can be a third of the price and I book my seat in advance (usually 5c or 5d) so I can get off the plane quickly while the dick heads decide to re-organise their duty free and block the aisle for others who are more prepared.

The interesting experience for those who are lucky enough like me to be able to fly to U-Tapao Pattaya airport, seat is not as important, as you still have to board a bus that takes you to the terminal/immigration.   Standing on the bus at the front right exit is more important as I only take carry on bag anyway so hit immigration pretty damn quick.(the bus will not leave until it is full)

The immigration was pretty shocking there as they only had 3 out of the 5 booths open but my forward planning meant I was 5th in the queue.

When I used to regularly use Thai my Gold card with them meant (providing economy was full & Business had availability) upgrade was virtually a given

With 2 flights a day right now and one being an A380 it's unlikely business will be full so its worth asking. I fly Thai business regularly from London and it's very rarely full in Business.

The difference in return fare on average at the moment is about £1000-1400 Econ-Biz so if the £600 quoted is for one way that about full price, if it's for a return then snap their hand off.

Will be interested to see how you get on - please post an update.

It is extremely unlikely that you will get a free upgrade regardless of how you are dressed unless you have elevated frequent flier status. I have got a number of free upgrades but only on airlines that I had flown a lot with. I have never managed to get a free upgrade on Thai but did get one on points.

The best airline that I have got free upgrades with is Qatar. On one return booking I got a free upgrade between Bangkok and Doha and then another on the return from Doha and Bangkok.

The gold card is usually the Key

But a full economy is the precursor

Im surprised you never got one with Thai as its a freebie when gold card attained and also every time its renewed, not withstanding the ad hoc ones you get

Typically only free upgrades are done when the cabin below is completely full.

Most airlines will then upgrade their FF/regular customers first by seniority of their status.  I used to get a lot of this when travelling regularly on business holding top tier FF cards.

You do hear stories of people getting lucky without any of the above, maybe its a honeymoon trip/big bithday or something but often its because they have some friends or connection with the airline staff.

Having said that, no harm in asking nicely at check in - don't ask - don't get !!

Must be very handsome man I have so far been lucky with 9 free upgrades on Thai.
