Help with email on iPad & iPhone please

Featured Replies

I'm having constant problems with my email.

I delete a message on my iPad and it still appears on my iPhone. I try to delete it there and I get a message 'Unable to move'. Same thing happens in reverse - delete on iPhone, still on iPad.

If I delete the email address in Settings and add it back, the problem disappears but soon comes back.

I have 3 email addresses altogether.

I have 'Fetch new data' on Push and 'Mail Days to Sync' on No Limit.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried to delete mail on a computer?

Have you tried to delete mail on a computer?

I hardly ever use the PC now so it would very a real pain to have to use it every time I want to delete an email.

I didn't use to have this problem it's been the last 6-9 months or so. I used the iPad & iPhone for a couple of years without the problem.

One other thing, at the top of the emails when I'm looking at 'All Inboxes' instead of saying 'Mailboxes' it sometimes has a long list of letters & numbers with dashes in between (something like 7EKDIRG8-..... etc etc). Is this normal?

Not an expert in any way but what I do when mail box get "sour" is to delete account and re-create. Sure some BM with better knowledge on the subject will come up with a better way to solve the issue, only a question of timing

i don't use mac but it sounds like a sync issue between the main server and the apple clients (iphone/ipad).

what email are you using ? is it setup as IMAP?

maybe follow this link might help: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4762736?tstart=0

Yes, I've done that a couple of times and it temporarily solves the problem. It comes back though.

Thanks.

As rainman point out it's likely a sync problem and there will likely be a solution on the web but sure some BM will chip in if post is kept alive

My 2 email accounts (along with my iCloud account) are Hotmail.

Thanks. I tried to follow the thread but it didn't seem to match up to the options that show on my iPad, and the rest of it was a bit beyond me.

I had the same problem on my iPad a few months back. But deleting the email account & then reinstalling the account worked for me.

Thanks.

As I said above, I did that and cleared the problem but it happened again within a few days.

I had no problems for ages when I first set things up but this has been happening for a while now. I don't understand why it started when I didn't change any settings etc??

Usually the solution is found on the internet.

have you tried Apple support. I usually only use them as a last resort because of the time spent on the call.

I have tried various searches etc. The help thread posted earlier was about the issue, but didn't match up with the Settings shown on my iPad.

I was hoping someone on here would be able to help, they gave in the past, to avoid having to call Apple Support :-)

Download Spark for free , and ditch Apple mail , that should fix your problem.

Definitely an IMAP problem.

Thanks for the advice. Again, some of the steps in the link didn't match my options and some of it was a bit beyond me, sorry.

Sounds like I need to manually configure the mail settings which I'm quite likely to screw up if I attempt it!

Would Hotmail have automatically put IMAP option on my accounts or would I have had to set it up myself???

Wish I could help you more, but I no longer own any Apple devices to test this out. IMAP is a finicky protocol that often times has issues doing what it was meant to do, which is syncing email status across various devices and platforms. I run into issues all the time on Android/Windows, and I'm pretty confident that the trouble described in the link was similar to what you have.

The easiest method to try to fix (although, time consuming and you could potentially lose email) is to remove the account from your device and re-install it. That would presumably resolve any prefix/path issues by re-downloading the fresh IMAP settings if you're doing automatic set up. Those can get corrupt when you start adding folders. Other than that, not sure what to tell you. Have you tried to just restart the device yet? Long shot, but that has often cleared cache issues before with my devices.

I had a similar problem. I was using the mail app on iPad.

I installed the outlook mail app and now all is well. I hope this helps

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

As I mainly use the 2 Hotmail accounts, occasionally the iCloud one, I've just added the Outlook app to the bottom bar on the iPad and removed the Hotmail accounts from the Apple mail app. I'll see how I get on.
