New Jetstar routes MEL & SYD to SGN direct

Just saw this in the local rag:

http://www.traveller.com.au/159-to-vietnam-jetstar-to-launch-flights-from-australia-to-vietnam-gtuaur

Planning to start May this year with one-way offers of $159 starting today.

This is great news.

It will be one more way of getting to and from Thailand.

Ho Chi Minh is worth a few days on the way over or back.

Here is the body of the article for those that cannot access the link:

Jetstar will launch flights from Sydney and Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City, linking to Vietnamese domestic partner Jetstar Pacific.

Jetstar Pacific, a 70/30 joint venture between Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar parent Qantas Airways, is growing rapidly in an attempt to fend off a competitive threat from domestic budget rival VietJet.

Jetstar will fly 787 Dreamliners on the route.

"The growing middle class in Vietnam has made it one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world," Jetstar Group Chief Executive Jayne Hrdlicka said in a statement.
She said the new flights from Australia to Vietnam, which begin in May, would link up to 15 Jetstar Pacific domestic destinations from Ho Chi Minh City.

"Vietnam has the potential to become as popular as Bali or Thailand for Australian travellers," Ms Hrdlicka said.

"In the last 12 months, there has been a 21 per cent increase in visitors from Vietnam to Australia and we expect to see that increase with the introduction of our low fares on the route."

Vietnam Airlines and Qantas last year said they would invest $139 million to more than double the size of Jetstar Pacific's fleet to 30 aircraft by 2020.

The CAPA Centre for Aviation has said that VietJet commands 40 per cent of Vietnam's domestic market and it will likely surpass Vietnam Airlines this year as the country's biggest domestic carrier.

Jetstar's non-stop flights from Australia to Vietnam will break a monopoly held by Vietnam Airlines and will compete against one-stop offerings from rival low-cost carriers AirAsia X and Singapore Airlines' Scoot arm.

To celebrate the launch, Jetstar will be offering seats for sale at $159 one-way in a 12-hour sale starts at midday on Thursday.

The inbound flight arrives at 9pm which is too late for any connections.  The outbound flight is 1130pm so that could be more useful.

Out of Melb it is Mon-Weds-Saturday which isnt so great.

But anything that adds flexible options is a great thing.

Has anyone noticed that low-cost carriers cunningly have the most gorgeous women cabin crew, and heart defibrillators available....

Case in point, Lion Air, Singapore to Jakarta in November. (Brand new plane too)  Aussie pilots.

Unless you are planning on exploring for a few days SGN isnt a cheap connection to Phnom Penh, or Jakarta.  It is cheap to BKK with lots of competition, Singapore is still best for maximum options and best prices with an early arrival at 5pm that links to most major cities.

But again more options is good.

I'm thinking of using it to do a circuit:

e.g. MEL-BKK (direct or via KL or SIN)

then BKK-PNH-SGN-MEL.  Harass KGBAgent for a week ot two then a few days in SGN on the way back to MEL.

or vice-versa

Or just another way of getting to MEL from either BKK or PNH if the price is right.

PNH-SGN is airline mafia run, no low cost carriers.  One way is $250

I think the right routing for that would be MEL-SIN-PNH which Jetstar have good connections on some days.

Then PNH-BKK

Return on the direct flight or via Singy....or via Ho Chi and Singy.

That would work... way too many planes though.
