Hi guys,

 

  I have not done one of these for a while but have decided to do so for this year.

 

  As most of you know the 11th is almost certain to be a bar closure day.

 

  As a result I will be running Skanks and Singlets for all PA members: It's very simple, we meet at Sexy at 8:00PM. We make our way at a VERY slow pace down beach road towards Walking Street getting steadily drunker. This is a BYOB crawl although I will bring some bottles of my own.  Every 7 11 (there are 7) we stop for mixers and a drink across the street while mingling with the beach road girls and having some good times. 

 

  By the time we get to Walking STreet it is normally getting ready to open and we are nice and drunk. We will then go through a number of gogos and spots that will be up for discussion.

 

  Dresscode for Skanks and Singlets is to DRESS LiKE A TOURIST.

 

  IE; Socks with sandals, camera around neck, sunglasses at night, singlets, stupid shorts, flower bracelets, fanny packs, fake gold chains, crocs you name it...the sillier the better.  This is part of the tradition. Dress like you are on holiday for the first time!  We will also have a special tour group flag.

 

  Hope to see you guys here. Keep in mind we are walking quite a bit so be in good physical shape.

Also before anyone asks, drinking, including on the beach in public, is legal and no issue. Many Thais do it that day too.  Its purchasing that is against the law.

Are they open on the 10th until normal?

I know sometimes the closures can start at midnight.

We are not sure yet.  Depends on the powers that be. Sometimes it is 12AM, sometimes not.

I think many miss the whole point of Alcohol bans during Buddhist holidays.  There is a ban in effect due to the religious practices of most of the Thai people.  Makha Bucha day is one of those particular days.

I find it and most Thai's would also find it highly disrespectful to be dressing up as "flagrant tourists" and flaunting the alcohol ban on one of their most religious days.

 

To go out and drink while keeping it on the "lowdown" on days like that is one thing....To make a mockery of it and flaunt the "ugly tourist" concept  during Makha Bucha while drinking in public is just plain outright disrespectful and tasteless in my opinion.  Its no wonder why tourist get a bad reputation.

  I appreciate the feedback but I have done this crawl about 10-12 times and never had a major complaint.  We look like pretty much every other guy walking around that is a tourist that day and actually keep the bottles and beer in the backpacks and pour it in plastic cups to keep it discreete. There are hundreds of Thais on the beach drinking all day as well as not everyone is a practicing Buddist. I appreciate where you are coming from but many, many guys are not practicing Buddists. It is also not a ban on alcohol but rather purchasing and the venues.

I'd normally be there, but have a TG from a previous trip I'm LT'ing morning of the 11th and into the night for what will be a Patts lull period.
