Koh Samet advice

Sorry not sure where to post this but here go's

I'll be staying in Pattaya for most of my trip, the missus is flying into Bangkok a few days after I arrive. I plan to pick up her from Bangkok and drive to Rayong to pick up a boat to Koh Samet. No problems so far.

We are going to stay a night in Koh Samet but need to leave around 8am in the morning as she has a meeting in Bangkok at 2pm.

Looking at the ferry schedule, it seems that they don't start until 10am which would be very tight for her meeting.

The question I have is, can hotels arrange a speedboat for 8am and if so, whats the rough cost ?

Thanks

I thought ferry's started earlier to and from the island at 8am. Speedboats can be arranged but expect to pay up to 1800B if going by yourself. I've shared one with several people about 3 times from Ban Phe and paid 150-200B

That's a lot of travel for a day in Koh Samet. Like 2.5 hrs each way driving with light traffic and at least 30 min each way via speed boat. I did that one trip for 4 days. It was relaxing, but a touch on the boring side. Mosquitoes were pretty bad, if I recall. Not sure I'd bother for 1 day, but I guess it could be fun if you're going with someone who hasn't been there before.

Like a complete sucker, I paid some insane "personal speed boat" price. I think it was 1,400b each, and to my surprise (or lack thereof), we picked up 6 other people on the way. Nice and "personal". On the up shot, they don't drop you off at the main pier to fend for yourself for a taxi. You get beach-side drop off and pick up right in front of your hotel (assuming it is beach side). Felt weird walking off the boat with my suitcase in my hand. I'm pretty sure you can find someone at any point day/night to bring you over if you're willing to shell out the money.

That island was definitely corrupt. Half the boats get spot checked for some type of entry fee. literally cash in hand for some guy in what may or may not be a legit government uniform. I was lucky to be spared this fee, but I heard it is a common "gotcha" moment. TiT.

    • Hi Guys

As many of you know we have been running now for 16 years and apart from one brief time when we were allowed PayPal, so could use the inbuilt donation function, we have tried to avoid asking for donations. We have certainly avoided being in anyones face about it.

      Sadly that has now changed.

The forum currently costs around $900 a month to operate. That includes Bangkok and Philippines but PA makes up the vast majority of it. This fee covers forum hosting, image hosting, notification emails and support.

Before anyone says "its expensive" please be aware we have tried for years to find better for cheaper - it just doesn't exist for the size we are. Also a lot of hosts wont Touch us anyway. Our current host is actually cheaper than the previous one but that brings its own problems.

      Moving on -

I would like to stress there is NO obligation whatsoever. Also, whatever happens the forum is going no-where!

Donators can CHOOSE to have their donation listed (probably in this thread or we can make a new one) or to remain anonymous. Likewise they can CHOOSE whether the amount is published or not.

There is no minimum, or maximum for that matter. ANY donation will be very gratefully received. We are very aware that many members are also having it tough these days.

We are still unable to promote/post PayPal addresses etc on the forum so would ask that anyone who would like to make a donation to PM me, or ask me here to PM you and we will sort out details via that PM.
