Udon recommendations

I'm thinking of hiring a car for a few weeks to go on a bit of a tour of northern Thailand.

 

Been up as far as Chiang Rai before on a scooter, but missed out huge chunks of Thailand as the riding was a bit of a pain. In particular, I missed all of Issan.

 

I keep reading bits and pieces about how udon is a nice change of pace compared to Pattaya, so am interested in any recommendations about where to go, places to see, women to meet etc

 

I can speak very basic, but understandable thai - i.e. can speak in complete sentences, so language not a major worry.

 

So, looking for advice from anyone living in the area or who has visited and has knowledge of the place.

 

Also interested in any recommendations for local car rental places for a cheapish runabout for 2 or 3 weeks.
