Khao Yai a golfing trip report

LOTTELLEE WINNA

Recommended Posts

So 16 from my golfing crew set off from Udon Thani and headed to Khao Yai for a 3 day golf-fest (Kho Yai is around 3 hours north of Pattaya). We headed for the town of Pak Chung and stayed at the Rimtarn inn (a 3 star OK hotel - across the road from a decent bar playing good tunes and serving a fine collection of ales...also decent Italian restaurant next door).

For those seeking 'after golf' action, it can be found, but needs a little hunting down - hotel concierge or taxi driver for details of a couple of places just out of town.

The total cost for 2 nights accommodation (inc breakfast) and 3 rounds of golf (inc 2 days carts) was around 8,000THB.  We had a fantastic trip to Khao Yai and I would say that the golf courses on offer here, are here is well worth playing. Guys, it is trips like this that make me really believe that I am 'living the dream' here in LoS.

Here is a quick summary of the 3 courses we played:

Khaoyai/Mission Hills is Jack Nicholas designed and is situated between 2 valleys in the mountains on a 450 rai land parcel just outside the Khao Yai National Park. There are the stunning views over the surrounding hills from everywhere on the golf course, especially the back nine. An excellent layout as it winds beneath the steep hills that border the Khao Yai Park. Facilities are rather basic and in need of some upgrading. However, if only to take in the mountain scenery Khao Yai Golf Club makes for the ultimate Thai golf experience. My crew simply loved playing golf here.Mission-Hills-Khao-Yai-CC-18.jpg

Rancho Charnavee - Designed by Bob McFarland, is a course which aspires to be in championship condition. It has outstanding facilities (changing facilities/restaurant/hotel), however the feedback from my guys was that the course itself seemed like a long slog and a little bland - relatively flat and 'tricked-up' with sand and water. The greens are very quick and challenging. Some very nice features are the private 'hi-so' airport in the middle of the course and the big yacht moored in the lake by the first tee. Although not a personal favorite, I would definitely recommend playing it.

Bonanza is rumored to have been the owner’s favorite TV western series, thus the name of this golf club. This international quality golf course plays through one of the stunning Khao Yai valleys. Bonanza has elevation changes of about 120 feet, sloping generally south to north. many holes are wide open with scarcely any trees in sight and has the fewest bunkers of any course in Thailand. Adjoining the property is the Bonanza Khao Yai hotel for stay and play golf guests. Again, my golfing crew were raving about this course, they really enjoyed it.

Lol, The golf course actually used to be in the centre of the National Park when I used to work there. You literally could have had your game disturbed by a herd of wild elephants or a wandering tiger! The government ordered it closed about 25 years ago.

It's a lovely area though.

Yes mate it's a simply stunning area. I am astonished that anyone ever got permission to build the golf course in the middle of the national park....although TIT!!!

Not much signs of it closing, in fact it looks like they are upgrading the clubhouse currently.

I didn't go there, but I do recollect from a previous trip to Pak Chung, one of the guys talking about it. Is the pub worth a visit?

Yes mate the 3 free massage chairs are still there. One of our guys came in pissed and set it to run for 15 minutes - he fell asleep and the concierge couldn't wake him, so left him there all night 555555.

It's a private airstrip. To the right on a really good long hard par 4.

It's fucking cool as shirt.

You have to get up there mate. Not that far from Pattaya and the golf is awesome.

Whack a little back pack on the melon in Pattaya, and drag her up there as company.

Easy peasy.

I'd like to make a trip like this. Full disclosure I'm not in Pattaya nor have I ever been, but let's not let that stop us. Planning a trip to Thailand in December. Of course I won't have clubs with me or golf shoes but I do have a nice pair of New Balance running shoes.

I think I'm a little more interested in the golf than the others so I thought I'd chime in. Plus my post count is pathetic.. somehow this golf outing turned into a story of melons and massage chairs fast. Who cares! lol

Nothing wrong with New Balance runners to play golf in . I've done 14 golf trips and never taken golf shoes .....whatever I wear on the plane is what I wear to golf, New Balance or Reebok.

And don't worry about taking melons.....plenty of melons at all the golf clubs....sometimes referred to as caddies.

Melons! Oh my. I guess l should reread far canal thanks for not flaming my dumb ass. I dont need to bring my own melon. Good!

8000 baht, about 250usd for three days of golf and two night accommodations. I could swing that.

In Boracay now then off to Saigon then hopefully off to Pattaya.

How's pace of play?

One of the lads on the trip has told me a bit about the 'after-golf' activities in Pak Chung. On the outskirts of town is soi Toyota (where the old Toyota dealership was)...a few karaoke bars, massage and short-time rooms. A good way to get rid of your frustrations after a challenging day of golf  :WinkGrin1:

We took a van full of entertainment.

Much easier.:)
