The other Thailand

Recommended Posts

Ever see one of these on your adventures in country? The northern Thai's catch them, break off the feet and give them to the toddlers to play with for the day.

But if you ever get a chance to see the walking sticks, now those are some creepy huge critters. Wish I had some pics.

Was that in Thailand? I used to work as a tour guide in one of the National Parks there and luckily never came across anything quite like that. I don't think much of the Takhaap's (giant centipedes) either.

Ah coming from Australia this is one thing that isn't going to bother me at all about Thailand. I have dealt with that many spiders/snakes/bugs here that I should be laughing in LOS.

Has anyone been bitten by a spider here on this forum? Snake? Scorpian?

I haven't been but I was in Phrae when a kid stepped on a scorpion.

The kid was in excruciating pain and everyone stood around laughing their heads off. I got a cold cloth and put it on the kids forehead and that just split the group into tears of hysterical laughter.

I suppose it hurts but I'm still befuddled at the reaction from the family members.

I was bitten by a spider in South Africa some years back. I have no idea what type it was but it bit me on my belly just above my belly button. It didn't hurt as such but the next day there was a big red patch about 50mm in diameter and it was just weeping blood, quite scary really. It went on like that for about 2 days and then just cleared up. Had to bin a few tee shirts but I'm still kicking.

My UK friend was stung by a scorpion recently and the Thai builders he had in just laughed their heads off and told him to rub Tiger Balm on.

He called me in panic so I asked my Thai wife for advice and she said the same, just rub in some Tiger Balm and sure enough after a whil;e the pain had gone.

Had a good sized Praying Mantis on us the other day at a waterside restaurant near Bang Saray. Not a huge one but about 5 or 6 inches.

Get a lo9t of bugs out our way so will remember to keep my camera handy.

One to watch out for is the tiny tiny little spider with the white marking. The ones that "jump"

They bite your feet. At first you think its a mozzie or an ant but then your foot starts to swell and boy can it get big.

this seems a spider of the argiope family, is a common type even here in europe, is not dangerous, and make a very reconoscible web :P
