Always end up on the toilet...... Advice needed for next trip please...

Last time was the worst for me. Think it was a combination of sunburn/sunstroke, a dodgy street food meal. Ended up on the toilet too much and was sick twice.

Before I've been to the pharmacy for strong tablets, charcoal tablets and rehydration power drinks, never wanted Imodium.

It didn't work so went to the Soi Bukauo clinic, had more tablets and an antibiotic injection and they put me on a drip... £50 later & Think that cured me the next day or so.

Any ideas how to stop this again?? It is no street food, 7/11 or western grub only?

Saw this advertised........... Enterosgel

Has anyone tried this as a prevention?

Thanks for any help. Really don't want to waste 3 days being ill and constantly looking for toilets...

Give the street food away unless it is a cart or place recommended by others.

Well... don't stay in the sun for too long. Apart from that the general RULES apply, most say eat from the busy street vendors as the turnover is higher. Personally I always eat from the vendors carts and rarely get sick. Wouldn't count on restaurants being any cleaner than street vendors.

Best thing to do is just keep hydrated and crap it all out. Don't take anything that plugs you up unless 100% necessary. Your body is pretty good at looking after itself.

Oh - one thing I always do that I'm sure has helped. Every 7-11 sells a Yakult equivalent (probiotic yoghurt drink). I stock up the fridge with these and chug one or two a day... I reckon it helps.

Others may be able to suggest medications, I've never bothered.

I maybe wrong, will not be the first time, but I see that you don't want to take Immodium, which I do, for the first three or four days.  After that and my first mega dump everythings fine.

My thought on this is that if your from the West that your body is used to eating pretty standard Western fodder, which seems nowadays to be full of additives and chemicals and possibly GM modified, and once in Thailand you are eating fresh fruit and seafood without any of these additives so your body needs to adjust initially by expelling this unknown stuff quickly until it gets used to it.

Works for me but I add I am no specialist unlike many others we are so lucky to have on this forum.

Drink Colloidial Silver. Stop eating pussy. Never lick arse.

I always take Imodium and zma tablets with me, your stools are always loser in Thailand . Zma helps with cramps and dehydration, drink plenty of coconuts and water.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion no matter how extreme, my opinion and advice is if your digestive system is sensitive to change of diet,  it is imperative you remain hydrated and take re-hydration salts. I also use Loperamide Hydrochloride tablets both as a precaution and resolution to bowel problems.

i think it's the water. drink only bottled water. avoid anything made from tap water, including ice. i stopped eating that spicy soup because every time i ate it, i ended up sitting on the pot for a day or so...i can eat spicy food, so i ruled out it was caused by that.

but my personal research is still inconclusive. the research will resume in a month... :GoldenSmile1:

Don't spend so much time in the sun that you get burnt. Drink a lot of water to keep you hydrated. If street food causes you problems, don't eat it. Some folks can not deal with spicy food; you may be one of them.

You can't always get what you want but if you try, sometimes you might find that you get what you need.

Give Travelan or similar a go, you take I before each meal, I sporadically used it on my trip, I still have the throne a workout but didnt take it until after I had that experience...im still blaming the bugs the bar girls were eating and I tried, was a good turd though!

Can't remember where I heard it, but the advice was to drink coke with each meal because that shit kills everything.

Weirdest health advice I'd heard, but I guess it could have some merit.

Personally I never drink the stuff.

Try cipro not Immodium... cipro will kill the bacteria ,Immodium is just a cork,,,, also a lot of this will come from dirty utensils not the food ,clean modern restaurants might be better for you even if they do not taste so good.

I spend half my money on hookers and booze ,the other half I waste.

The old advice I always heard, particualry on a much older forum than this, was street food was almost always fine and it was the 3 star hotel restaurants and other similar places that were the worst.   Street food sellers tend to get through all their food in a day and cook it at high temperture.  Their reputation is their livlihood.

I tend to notice the effect of changes in diet quite a lot these days, although not to the extent it actually causes me any inconvenience.

You may not actually be getting food posioning, it may just be your body complaining about all the food its not used to.  Chilli can have that affect if you are not used to it, different bacteria (includnig friendly bacteria), and of course a likely increase of beer consumption.

And the pussification continues.,  Boys that grew up in plastic bubbles will not do well in Thailand.  Try eating some street food in your home country months before visiting LOS.

OP, IMHO western food is much more risky then Thai food. In many cases, they just don't know how to prepare it. On the other hand if I was in the mood for a rare steak it would darn well be in a well established Farang run restaurant. I remember my first trip up country. The GF wanted to pick up supplies for dinner. Went inside the market and found a whole side of pork strung up. 90+ degres, flies and asundrey critters crawling all over it. She placed her order, they sliced off a slap, wrapped it in Banana leaf, and off we went. I didn't die that night, but I sure wouldn't want to try that pork American style.

I think in general we westerners get exposed to a whole new pallet of bacteria when we come on holiday. My plan "A" has always been starting a course of pro-biotics a week before my flight and continue for two weeks in country. I have never had gastro intestinal distress while using this method. One year I decided I've always been healthy during my trips, this pro-biotic stuff is s waste of money. so I skipped it. Sick as a dog my first day in town and was off for about two weeks after. Went back to my plan "A" never had a problem again.

As always, taking antibiotics prophylacticly is a bad idea. Best to get that sorted professionally before running to the pharmacy and picking up a Z-Pack or Cipro.
