Unregistered sim card - will it get turned off?

So I got a tourist sim card last week from BKK airport but wasn't asked to register. I've now changed the package and extended validity for 180 months - does anyone know if the sim card will get turned off it remains unregistered?

Yes but go to the service providers office & they will give you a new card with the same mobile number, you pay a fee of course.

Why would you need to register a sim card? I have always had one of the girls pick one up for me at Ayutthaya Park. Who wants to pay tourist prices anyway?
