Meldonium - Illegal USA heart & diabetes med avail in LOS?

While this no doubt comes as a shock to many of you, I must admit that I am not an elite world class athlete looking for an illicit competitive advantage from a Performance Enhancing Drug like meldonium – the newly banned PED that tennis star Maria Sharapova was busted for testing positive earlier this year.

But like many fellow BMs, these days I do suffer from the medical conditions that meldonium addresses, namely diabetes and progressive ischemic heart disease, the most common cause of congestive heart failure and progressive chronic kidney disease.

Despite meldonium proving to be effective and cheap ($4 over the counter for a 50 pill box of 500mg pills) in former Soviet countries, it’s not approved in the USA by the FDA because there haven’t been long term studies on possible adverse health effects.

But for me, the fact that all these elite athletes have been using this med for years and aren’t dropping dead like flies tells me pretty much all I need to know.  That plus the fact that, while there might maybe be the possibility of long term negative effects of meldonium, there is absolutely positively the long term negative effect of death from my health conditions.  So if meldonium can help improve my quality of life for the time I have remaining, then fuck it – sign me up.

Since the heightened attention of the PED ban at the start of this year, meldonium has jumped in price from $4/box to $60-$70 from online pharmacies in Canada and the like, which are often now out of stock.

So does anyone know if meldonium is available in LOS pharmacies, like Boots or even the specialty pharmacy Fascino (they can usually order almost anything)?  And if anyone has any personal experiences using the med, please do share.

This not illegal in the US , it's not FDA approved.

Made and sourced in Eastern Bloc countries. And of course abused by athletes.

If you are suffering form heart problems it would be dumber than dumb to self medicate with this stuff without your cardiologist knowing, since it may interact with what you do take.

Talk to your physician first.

Simple answer is that I don't know but I must admit that I like the sound of the way it supposedly works. Dr. Ray Peat, somebody I admire for his independent research has long said that diabetes is actually caused by the mitochondria being reduced in efficiency and stressed by burning fatty acids, particularly unsaturated ones. You must make your own mind up of course but here's a thread on the Ray Peat forum about it. https://raypeatforum.com/community/threads/maria-sharapova-tested-positive-for-a-drug-ray-peat-talked-about.9999/

Looks like an interesting forum; thanks for the tip.

Not being FDA approved means it is illegal in the USA with the technical exception of a couple rare scenarios, neither of which would qualify for this drug:

there are only two categories of patients for whom a U.S. physician can prescribe a drug that is not FDA-approved. One is those enrolled in a clinical trial, or study, of an experimental drug. The other is patients with serious medical conditions for whom there are no alternative treatments. Such patients can obtain experimental drugs through the FDA’s expanded access, or “compassionate use,” program

Ray Peat is an inspiration, so nice to read research not financed by the pharmaceutical industry. Some of his followers on that forum can be a bit intense though.

Just asked at the Pharmacy near to 'Tim' on 2nd Road. Spoke to the younger guy who says he has never heard of it. Not conclusive by any means but they seem to have most stuff if it is available.

Other than bumping up your impressive post count, what is the point of such a useless post?

... other than making you look like a lame troll threadfucking an otherwise straightforward thread?

Ah, bummer but thanks for the tip (and the resource for researching future meds).

You just saved me (and all other BMs interested in this) from wasting a lot of time.
