Yes   unfucking  believable that  after    all their trouble to  have roadblocks and stop people and impound their vehicles and motorbikes  its up more than last year  madness ,  80percent  was people on motorbikes  ,  plus  I should imagine on top   of that figure of  442 over 7  days ,  average  over  60  deaths,  a  lot  of the  injured  must  die  as well so  the  figure  is  much, much higher ,   only  other country as bad as   Thailand  is  Libya   ,  the  people   on   this  forum want to ride   motorbikes   even when  there    pissed they  must  have  a  death wish ,its  a sad , sad  week   for  families ,  but  lots of  baht for  funerals, temples  etc,    its  just  a  waste  of life ,but  you  cannot  change   the  mentality of  Thai  people  in there   driving skills  or  lack of  driving skills, any  other  country  the  Governments   would  be  tearing there  hair  out   but  not  Thailand,     this  is  just  my  opinion of  the   matter    it  seems  such a  waste of life.

The ratio between fatalities and injured is unusually low for road traffic incidents. For 442 fatalities you would expect around a greater number. There appears to be an underreporting of injured. It looks like they are recording the number counted by the police summoned to incidents. The Hospital administration which records admissions and causes has indicated that the number of road injured admissions is significantly higher than the transport department's statistics. It appears a large number of accidents are below the police radar, example single bike or vehicle incident not involving fatalities.

Yes, that's what someone reported in another thread. If the ambulance picks them up at the scene of the accident, and they die in the ambulance, they would not be counted in that 446.

 

Scary. Libya, by the way, is number one, but their total population is only 6.5 million, so the total deaths in Thailand are far, far, greater, as the ranking is based on percentages, not total deaths.

It's scary stuff... But what's even more scary is that the daily average in 2013 (I believe) was the same (around 60 per day) according to WHO - and that number for sure hasn't gone down.

 

There's no doubt that the casualty number is far higher than what's been reported from those in charge.

 

Its a funny mentality that during songkran people care even less about other people in traffic than normal, and drive around drunk. Even here in relative quiet Udon Thani, people behave like absolute idiots in the traffic, during songkran.

The world health organisation reckon there were 24,237 road deaths in Thailand in 2013. Divide that by 52 weeks and you get an average of 466 road deaths every week. So depending on whose statistics you go by, Songkran looks like just a normal week in terms of road accident fatalities.

 

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm missing something.
