Maybe some have already , ...today Windows update installed a totally new version on my laptop , this one

Version  1511

O.S. build  10586.218

 

Took a few hours (+2)  to completed ,settings Little bit changed , all files same place , it only pushed edge as browser again .....,

Yes update is as good as I have ever had.

 

Though I worried why something we have had to pay for over 20yrs is now free...we all know nothing is free !

Cleaned up my laptop yesterday and it seems to be running smoothly today.

My guess is they are simply changing their business model.  Either they plan to rely on money they will get for supporting the product, help tickets and such, or they are going to shift and try to become a huge marketing company like google.  My money is on the second one.

Microsoft's Operating Systems were arguably better received when based on others' systems: DOS -> Windows 3.x-2000. Digital's VMS -> Windows NT. MS started to lose me as an enthusiast after that era of Operating Systems. 

 

Logging onto a Win10 instance recently I saw a patch had been applied and the desktop and start menu were no longer accessible. Thanks, Microsoft. Luckily I had a pre-disaster drive with other operating systems to clone to the malfunctioning one. I think I'll abstain from Win10 for some months. 

 

As to your choices: Win7 will get patches until 2020. XP still works for most uses but some applications and now Google Chrome have dropped support. Reportedly some registry settings can trick MS into thinking your XP computer is an appliance and eligible for continued patches. 

 

Linux has some desktops that that look like some of the more elegant versions of Windows. Ah for the Good Old Days. ;)

I have already on the 2 versions a start button and menu , I think you are referring to the very early versions or to windows 8...., al is working fine , and to stop windows be to curious of my doings I just did run a program  named "stop windows spying " , al works fine for me .
This is a very simple to use start menu , and the start  button is down left ...

Windows 10 is a good upgrade but it's a bit sneaky Microsoft automating customers, I know lots of people who have updated without approving and lots has broken. They do allow you to roll back however not everyone of course knows this.

I have windows 8, my question is can I upgrade to Windows 10 OR do I need to update 8.1 first. Dont want to f..k up my computer.

I only upgraded my two machines from XP to 7 around 6 months ago. And I work in ITB !  The only reason I did it is because third party software stopped supporting their XP versions.

I know what you mean. 7 is actually quite all right, and what I use for all new installs. But there really wasn't any reason to "upgrade" from XP before they truly stopped patching that.

(I still run XP on my main machine at work. To the exasperation of our IT department, of course. But hey, what do they know about computers? )

 

8 of course follows the general trend of every second major windows release being a complete joke. Don't go there.

 

10, I haven't actually tried yet, on the general principle that I don't support nagware, especially not when the nagging is for something I haven't even fucking installed yet!

(Sure you can turn the nagging off, but windows update likes to "repair" that missing feature every now and then.)

Hate Windows 8 and Windows 10 has thrown all privacy out of the window.

 

When my Win7 PC dies, or even earlier, I'll switch completely to Apple.

 

The last OS I actually felt I understood was Win 98!

Have you been able to confirm following in the 10 part 2 its still fully effective and its not been bypassed or other issues created that it doesn't block ?

Microsoft began doing this in the United States in mid 2015.

 

I've been using Windows 10 since June 2015, if I recall the dates of my zero cost upgrade correctly.

 

For those of you just receiving these upgrades, or options to upgrade, are you outside the USA?

 

BTW, I've had no issues at all with Windows 10 on my desktop since the upgrade.

I am not an expert , only using things people who are experts .....,but on screenshot you can see in red (by windows update ) when I call the "Advanced options" menu in update screen , that it says some settings are mine....

Also even after latest version update my "treated" Office 2016 marked that I needed to activate office 2016 (which was before " updated"by another patch ) .... I just pressed the red button of that patch ... and Office 2016 is "Activated" again

So that means that not only Windows have clever programmers, one thing specific I marked that stop windows spying is closing windows "telemetry" ...

Mine updated 3 weeks ago and I didn't notice any changes.

 

For those of you concerned with privacy there are plenty of guides on the internet on how to limit what you are sending. Here is an example: How to reclaim your privacy in Windows 10, piece by piece

Since Win 10 updates automatically (whether you want it to or not), the only way to have a "very early version" is if the computer is offline. 

 

Mine updated 3 weeks ago and I didn't notice any changes.

 

 

Perhaps the multiboot drive had something to do with it. For now, it's too much bother for questionable gain...I'll use pre Win 10 versions as long as practical. Maybe I'll even add Linux with a Windows 2000 appearing desktop. Win 2k was about the peak of Windows versions in my opinion, at least in terms of the desktop appearance and user interface. 

 

I'm even considering dumping my relatively new Windows phone after learning that Google isn't planning to make the Chrome browser work on a Windows phone, not to mention other apps that don't/won't exist. Good thing the phone was fairly cheap. ;)

For those ones amongst us, who have to keep an eye on your dates for visa or 90 day rapports ...., in Windows 10 the counter for date is back in the calculator  (was out in first win 10 , many complaints from users , including me ..., )  easy to keep track on your Th.visa dates
