Under 300 Baht ... And Good! (updated for 2024)

I had a very good cheeseburger at the Rock House on LK Metro Friday evening:

It was a bargain at 185 baht, with a good-sized patty of beef, plenty of cheese and a fresh bun.

post-276-0-62830300-1462093958.jpg

The tomato, raw onion and lettuce complemented the burger but didn't overwhelm it.

post-276-0-12446700-1462093970.jpg

The steak fries (chips) were also good; crispy on the outside, fluffy inside and not at all soggy, which is the downfall of a lot of thick-cut fries.

post-276-0-43680000-1462093962.jpg

Bottom line: The RH cheeseburger was better than you get in many Pattaya restaurants.  It was made from quality ingredients and balanced in terms of the flavors contributed by its components.  I wouldn't hesitate to order it again.

Thanks as always for your great photos and information Evil, excellent thread.

Sorry I don't have photos or exact prices, but I frequent Robins when in town, I find their fresh/toasted sandwich and soup combo is a great lunch time feed.

Never ever had a bad feed in Nickys, or Cafe Patini.

One more suggestion that comes via a friend on another board: Aroi on the Darkside. It has a Sunday buffet for 299 baht.

post-6485-0-01442400-1460471909.jpg

I visited Aroi in June of last year and wasn't much impressed with the Sunday buffet. However, it has improved greatly since then, according to recent reports. I'll pay it a return visit after Songkran.

I had all you can eat Italian on Friday night... it was very ordinary to be honest.... won't be back

I like the food at both Pattaya Beer Garden and the Pig And Whistle.

Frasers in Jomtiem also has some nice meals under the 300 price point

Thanks very much for the excellent food porn!

Magazine quality shots keep me swallowing because of the saliva collecting in the mouth.

Looking for a good roasted pork leg like they used to have at Topps on Pattaya center road at Second.

Big C has them but didn't seem fresh off the stove.

Malee 3 offers European and Thai food at very low prices, among the lowest in Pattaya for a sit-down restaurant. It's in a subsoi off Soi Bukhao, but I'll give more info on its location at the end of this post.

post-9139-0-80519000-1462327869.jpg

The exterior sign says Malee features Russian and Uzbek cuisine in addition to European and Thai, but I didn't see much evidence of Russian or Uzbek dishes on the menu. There were, however, several Dutch specialities listed, mostly snacks.

post-9139-0-33285300-1462327607.jpg

Although it's not a fancy restaurant, but it's clean and comfortable.  Because it's open-front, it can get quite warm, even when sitting next to a fan, when Pattaya is undergoing a hot spell like now.

post-9139-0-32885000-1462327611.jpg

The big attraction of Malee is its price range.  There are a lot of dishes under 200 baht and quite a few around 100 baht, with its burgers going for 45 to 60 baht and breakfast for 65 baht.

post-9139-0-66759600-1462327583.jpg

I had the roast lamb dinner at 159 baht and it tasted surprisingly good for the price.  It consisted of one thick piece of lamb which most restaurants would have sliced into three thin pieces; roast potatoes; gravy; and mixed vegetables (carrots, cauliflower, carrots and snap peas.

post-9139-0-39307500-1462327587.jpg

It wasn't a large portion, particularly regarding the lamb, but it was adequate for me.

post-9139-0-37283600-1462327590.jpg

The lamb was tasty and moist, but not the most tender I've had.  It certainly wasn't tough or overly chewy, just not as tender as most lamb.  There was some fat on the meat, but not too much.

post-9139-0-70144300-1462327593.jpg

I would have preferred for the gravy to have been served on the side- I forgot to ask- and not poured all over the plate.  But the gravy was good and had been been made from the drippings from the lamb.

[post-9139-0-24836800-1462327597.jpg

The vegetables seemed to be fresh and not frozen.  They hadn't been overcooked and retained a lot of flavor.

post-9139-0-62399900-1462327600.jpg

The roast potatoes were also good, crispy on the outside, fluffy inside.

post-9139-0-50676400-1462327603.jpg

In addition to the 65-baht special, the breakfast portion of the menu offered a lot of choices, including pancakes.

post-9139-0-28852600-1462327877.jpg

Malee is located down a subsoi off Soi Bukhao between Soi Diana and Soi 15.  The subsoi is directly opposite Pattaya City Hospital with a motorcycle shop on the southwest corner.

post-9139-0-98289300-1462327873.jpg

Bottom line:  It's not fine dining, but I'll certainly be back to sample more of Malee's budget fare.  I particularly want to try Toad in the Hole for 99 baht.

Went to the new burger king on sukhumvit yesterday for lunch.    Great.......some new crispy, bbq, bacon, cheeseburger, onion rings, and a chocolate shake.......perfect.  Haven't done that for a long time, and first shake I have had in 5 years and it was thick and perfect

went to Mickey D's a few nights before, my 2 "dates" wanted it, and ordered a lot, and I ate none, Mickeys okay, Burger King great.  My Australasian friend ate there for the first time and loved it

Strange location behind a gas station, but nice and clean with parking.   sign out front says everything imported, who knows

Great Thread Evil! I wish I had stumbled across it earlier.

Some amazing contributions form the rest of the members too.

That chickenparm at Rich Man-Poor Man looks especially good. I may have to give it a go before I leave town.

No one will ever come here just for the food, but Pattaya doe surprisingly well for a town of its size. I guess its all the expats living here that yearn for the comforting flavors of home.

GREAT THREAD SIR, WELL DONE :)

During a 28 day stay, I skip a lot of my usual 3-meal a day intake...most days its a big breakfast around noon, a nice meal around 6pm and generally thats it, maybe cart food snack on my way home late night.

My meals are split as follows: 100% western breakfast, 70% Thai / 30% Western dinner.  But, for me, I'd love the "challenge" to be 175Baht rather than 300 cuz I think, as you say, that is way way too easy.

175B is about $5usd...and that spent for a decent plate of food is getting harder, though as you have found, not difficult.  I would leave out the beverage cuz many of us drink beer or booze, and many of us have given liquor up and stick to a bottle of water, coke or tea.

That said, when I do head out for western food, I am most likely found at Pattaya Beer Garden when heading to WS for evening, or I hit one of the countless places in Central Festival if Im hitting LKMetro or soi7 area for the evening.  BUT, your thread has given me many, many more options, and for that i thank you...please soldier on sir, looking forward to future installments and i will contribute when there this summer.

Cheers, Alex

PS. I totally understand the pause during Songkran...hideous time indeed, I would have anything I need delivered (or stock up in advance) and never leave my house from start to finish.

I went to Harry's today for a late lunch. I really wanted to try put that pork and potato pancake dish, but the waitress said they only had it as a special.

Anyhow I had the meatballs and they were pretty good - especially for the price.

I also had a Toast Skagen as a starter. It was not very good and I wouldn't recommend it. A tiny portion and too much mayo. Only 145 Baht, but I think they could have done better with this dish.

With a coke the total was 380. Not bad at all. I will definitely be back. Especially if I hear the potato pancake dish is back on offer.

The special also looked good and sounded like a pretty god deal too.

The Toast Skagen is supposed to be a tiny starter, but I think you got too much Skagen for that size toast.

Where on Soi Diana is Harry's?

post-9139-0-88306400-1462798384.jpg

Witherspoons is a very popular sports bar and restaurant on Soi Bukhao near the corner with Soi LengKee. Not too long ago it ran into problems with Thai authorities over its operating hours, but those hassles appear to have solved.

post-9139-0-84141700-1462798388.jpg

It's back to attracting big crowds of sports fans. On Sunday night, Witherspoon's was pretty much packed to the last seat by 8.00 pm, but I was the only customer to order food.

post-9139-0-38208800-1462798392.jpg

I'd read on the boards that Greg of the former Greg's Kitchen had become the chef- or was at least supervising the kitchen- at Witherspoons and wanted to try the food. In the distant past, I'd had a meal at Witherspoon's and hadn't been much impressed, but I had enjoyed meals at Greg's Kitchen, so I thought I'd give Witherspoon's another try.

Witherspoon's has a pretty extensive menu, but I chose the daily special- the Sunday roast dinner- at 295 baht.

post-9139-0-24010100-1462798397.jpg

When I got there at 7.00 p.m, it was already quite busy and seats were scarce. After just a few minutes' wait, this is the meal I got:

post-9139-0-98494100-1462798403.jpg

It was a generous portion of lamb, roast and mashed potatoes, vegetables and Yorkshire pudding, with the plate unfortunately doused in gravy.

post-9139-0-53819200-1462798408.jpg

The slices of lamb don't show up well in the pics, but there were quite a few of them.  The vegetables were al dente, exactly as I like them.

post-9139-0-28381600-1462798412.jpg

The potatoes were good, particularly the mash.

post-9139-0-34212200-1462798418.jpg

The Yorkshire had risen nicely, but was a bit overcooked and heavy for my taste.

post-9139-0-58784100-1462798415.jpg

post-9139-0-71575500-1462799170.jpg

The lamb was tender and had a lot of flavor, but was also overcooked according to my preference.  By waiting until 7.00 pm to eat, I had violated one of my own cardinal rules for buffets and Sunday roasts: get there as early as possible. I've noticed a big difference in quality in a Sunday roast dinner eaten at noon or 1.00 pm  and one at 7.00 pm.  I wouldn't hesitate to try the Sunday roast at Witherspoon's again, but I'll be sure to get there earlier in the day.

The Sunday roast was good if not great.  However, Witherspoon's isn't a very comfortable place for a meal.  It's hot, noisy and crowded and I don't like sitting on bar stools when eating. My preference will always be for enclosed, air-conditioned restaurants.

I also ate at Witherspoon's last Thursday.  It was busy but nowhere near as crowded as Sunday. I was out even later,  at about 9.;30 pm.

post-9139-0-61521300-1462799174.jpg

I had wanted  the daily special (ham off the bone, two eggs and thick-cut chips for 240 baht), but they had run out of it.  I took that as a bad omen and decided to go with a breakfast sandwich for 140 baht rather than a full meal.

post-9139-0-20420200-1462799178.jpg

It included a big cup of coffee (or tea) and a small glass of "orange juice."

post-9139-0-42392000-1462799183.jpg

On the menu, the sandwich was called a "breakfast panini."  It certainly wasn't a panini, but still a good sandwich.

post-9139-0-73278800-1462799189.jpg

It's hard to see in the pic, but the sandwich consisted of a fried egg, back bacon and a sausage on a baguette-style bun,

post-9139-0-05117000-1462799194.jpg

Good quality ingredients had been properly cooked.  The yolk of the fried egg wasn't hard. The coleslaw as fresh and crisp, but had too much dressing.

post-9139-0-87145800-1462799199.jpg

Witherspoon's has a lot of items on its menu under 200 and 300 baht.  The daily specials are all under 300 baht and are mostly UK comfort food.  It also has promotions and specials on beer and other booze.  After 8.00 pm, there is a 2 for 1 special on bottled beer.  It's not misleading language, as the sign clearly states 2 bottles for one price.  In my case, it was two bottles of SML for 140 baht.

post-9139-0-47540800-1462799201.jpg

Bottom line:  Witherspoon's thrives as a sports bar, but its food seems pretty good, too. However, there are more comfortable air-conditioned restaurants nearby which offer similar fare at comparable prices.

Great thread "Evil" and couldn't agree with you more on "Witherspoons" food seating arrangements as in over 50 visits in 16 years never eaten here once due to the seating. Agree with you also that there are more comfortable air-conditioned within the vicinity.

Also if "Greg from Greg's kitchen is either cooking or supervising i will give it an even wider birth as i ate at his place twice and thought it was truly awful.

Loving this thread m8t, soldier on.

I'd love to know where is your favorite breakfast spot in central pattaya area.  If I miss the "free" breakfast at my hotel, I usually hit KISS on 2nd, nothing special, but served 24hrs.  I'd love to find a really good western breakfast served in the afternoon.

Cheers Alex
