Damn!  Those photos are making me long for some chicken fried steak from Threadgill's in Austin, Texas!

Aww, yeah! .. Threadgills! .. a classic Texas road house in a dilapidated old gas station.

I lived off of N. Lamar, about a half mile from the place .. I breakfasted there a million mornings .. strong Seaport coffee with buttermilk biscuits and sausage graaaavyyyyy!

Gawd 'amighty that brings back strong memories .. for you too, eh?

Maybe you are old enough to recall The Stallion's world-famous chicken fried steak, back in the day? .. also up on N. Lamar .. late at night, that place was totally Austin Weird.

Man, I am waning so nostalgic right now.

Country fried steak, also known as chicken fried steak, is a U.S. favorite which dates to the 1850s in Texas.

Why is it called chicken fried steak, when it's made out of beef ?

Because the beef is breaded and fried in the same manner as southern fried chicken.

ok, I think it would be better to call it country fried steak.

When the dish is called chicken something, I would expect it to be made out of chicken.

I will send a memo to the Southern USA and let them know that you are concerned. I am sure that they will be quick to remedy the situation. :)

Actually, when this is made correctly, it tastes pretty good, although it most certainly will never be mentioned in a healthy foods thread. I am a fairly decent home cook and I took several runs at getting this dish right and failed. I was following instructions from Alton Brown and other luminaries and could not get it right.

I rationalized myself out of the pain of failure, thinking I should not be eating this is the first place. Problem solved.

Back when I was working still, I was an occasional visitor to the Austin area due to the number of software companies that were located there. I always enjoyed my visits in part due to the good restaurants and also the pleasant people.

Saw my best bar sign ever in an Austin Bar -> "Persons talking to imaginary friends will be escorted from the premises".

I always thought it was called country fried steak and that chicken fried steak was a chicken version of it.

Nope...that would be chicken fried chicken!

Same batter; just with a chicken breast instead of beef.

As I stated in an earlier post,  country fried steak and chicken fried steak are regional dishes with several variations.  For many of us. the difference would be that country fried steak is pan fried in a skillet, while chicken fried steak is deep fried.  Chicken fried steak is almost always served with white gravy, while country fried steak is in some areas served with brown gravy heavy on onions.  However, it's not unusual to find skillet-fried country steak served with white gravy.  There's no right or wrong about it, it's just what's customary in a particular city or region.  Some restaurants give a choice of white or brown gravy.

Chicken fried steak is part of the official state meal of Oklahoma, which consists of 12 dishes!  Very hearty eaters in Oklahoma. I wonder if any death row prisoners in Oklahoma request the state meal as their last meal.  From a Web site, chicken fried steak in its essential form:

The best English breakfast I have found lately is at Jameson's Irish Pub. Unfortunately they don't actually have any Irish food like Irish stew but you can't expect Irish food in an Irish pub I know. They do, however, have Italian food but not my favourite pasta puttanesca.

Anyway, I digress. The full English breakfast is 199 baht in very nice aircon surroundings with sports TV. It's a little more than the the equivalent just up the street at the non aircon diesel fumes cafe just up the street. In both cases I rejected the mystery bag. Jameson's clearly gave me extra bacon but the cafe up the street did not, they simply didn't include the sausage I didn't want.

Comes with half decent coffee and has a choice of wheat bread.

Chicken and country fried steak are usually served with mashed potatoes on the side, but French fries are possible. Pics from the Net.

I lived in Dallas for 8 years, and your post and pictures bring back such fond memories. But because everything in Texas strives to be bigger, I remember the “Chicken Fried Steak Wars” when each restaurant strived to have the biggest servings. Some of them were so huge that they would hang over the edges of the gigantic plates.

Ahhhh...healthy eating from 2 of the basic food groups.....Salt and Lard. [emoji23]

Totally recommend hash browns and a couple soft poached eggs with it as a breakfast/brunch dish. So good!!

And I almost forgot about the heavenly good biscuits that were always served with this diet platter [emoji2957][emoji33]

Just a quick shout out for one of my wee secret places to eat, it's well under 300 baht, even including a drink, been in 2 minds about bringing attention to it, because of it's size and I want to still get a table.

The place is called Pang Pond cafe it's at the top of the soi, 3rd road end, that Dxpress apartments is on,  near legend pool hall. Does coffee, food and iced drinks, the bargirls I take there love the place, even serves Mint tea for those feeling a bit yucky after a night out. Hope someone can do a review on the placem here are some accurate (from my experience) phoyos from their facebook page.

Bit of a nightmare at the moment, as they are digging up that side street.

@Evil Penevil Maybe it's not an easy to answer question but i will ask anyway :) What are your Top3 (or Top5) restaurant choices for Thaifood, in Pattaya/Jomtien/Naklua? They should be easy to reach without needing a mototaxi. No problem for me to walk some longer distances if something is not on the Busroute, but i do not intend to travel to the Darkside or similar distances.
