Fav' Thai eatery

I remember eating once at the old Vientiane, have never been to their new location. So it's good you say? How are their prices and anything you recommend? I live nearby and should try them out again.

Try the Laarb, Phed, moo, gai, pla whatever, it's delightful as is the pla tod Kamin.

It would be pricey for a Thai from Esan but plenty of Thai customers there every time I go which is monthly so it has always been good.

OK thanks I'll check them out soon. We have Esan food often and I've actually been looking for a more upmarket Esan restaurant as most of the Esan food shops in Pattaya are little more than roadside stalls, so Vientiane may well fit the bill.

The Isaan place in Cental Mall (higher floor, north side) is pretty good and given there aren't any flies or stray cats, more upscale.

Sorry not sure. I recall it's in Thai. You can tell it's Isaan food by the pictures in front.

(my quote button is not working but...)

Tin cup is good during the day. More expats sitting there than Thais (all Thai food) - good food if the young girl or the man is cooking... Crap if you go at night and the old lady is "trying" to cook.

I went there many times with my lady friend during the day.

Some people call it the tin tables, other people call it the place with no name - most people I know call it the tin cup.

My go to place for good Thai food during the daytime.

No, not that one and that one isn't only Isaan. The one I'm talking about is better and located towards the beach side, not the 2nd road side.

Esan ribs from a mate's place in Loei.

You can tell from the picture it is Esan food LOL.

If you say so. I couldn't tell from that but anyone that know's Isaan food would recognize the typical Isaan dishes pictured in front of the place. I'll give more details the next time I'm in Central.

Thanks, that'll give me time to get the coffee off my keyboard I almost lost after reading you can 'tell it's Esan food from the pictures." I've lived in Thailand for 25 years and UT for 15 and that is some talent you have acquired.

That is somewhat analogous to saying I can tell it's Thai prawns and vegetables from the pictures, or a Nebraskan hamburger rather than one from Colorado.

But peace, I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

You can laugh all you like, but I'm sure if you saw the pictures in front of this place you too would know instantly that it's a restaurant specializing in typical Isaan foods. Also, I've eaten there about 5 times and the menu lives up to the pictures. Thais here in Pattaya go there for Isaan food. That should be good enough for foreigners looking for the same.

Thanks for permission, that's a relief.

It's "Thai" food mate. So is larb phed/gai/pla/moo which is as common in Udon Thai as it is Bangkok as is Pla Tod Kamin and som tam.

I can also tell from the pictures in the window of Carl Jr's that they do not specialize in either Thai or Esan food.

Do you also believe the urban legend that all of those LBFMs in Pattaya are from esan? Can you tell from their feet?

Ah, got you .... Tam Lae.

I always forget about that one, for some reason.

Yes of course some Isaan regional dishes are national. Doesn't mean there isn't such a thing as regional Isaan food (related to Lao of course). If you don't get that, just agree to disagree.

That's probably it.

Drove past today on our way back from Big C so I stopped and had a look at the menu. Seemed very reasonable. 100Bt for a laarp pla duk. Big Heineken 120 Bt. We'll try them out very soon.

I have eaten at Tam Lae on my most recent trip a few months ago. The food was really good. They have many different kinds of Som Tum and the Nam Tok and Laab was really good, I recommend it.

Was just up there today, didn't try them out but was shopping at Central and just wanted to have a look at the menu. Large selection of Issan dishes on the menu, but as far as I could tell no beer. Wouldn't dream of having an Issan meal without a few coldies to go with it.

  • 1 month later...

For seafood, Pupen in Jomtien, Moom Aroi in Naklua

But overall by far Vientiane. It was a sad day when it was displaced by that ugly Avenue.

I agree ate there many times and also stayed next door at the Palm villa hotel, miss both places...

Best Isaan place I know in Patters is opposite the village on Third Road. Much cheaper than Central I'm guessin'. Don't go at noon unless you want to wait a long time. Lots of lovely nurses from the nearby hospital though so the wait ain't so bad.

Some suggested dishes:

sum tom kapote kai kem (corn sum tom with salted egg) 50 baht

Tom Saep graduuk moo (Isaan hot and sour soup with ribs) 60 baht

Tons of other Isaan standards. The popularity of the place, filled with Thais with a rare Farang, lets you know you're on the right track.

Here's the location on google maps street view--wasn't there when this photo was taken, was a different place, Wokichiw?

Is there an English menu at that 3rd road place?

Another Isaan food place is another chain other than what's in Central that's in the new Harbor Mall on Pattaya Klang.
