Viral Conjunctivitis

Recommended Posts

I'm on my 6th day of this shit that doesn't respond to antibiotics. My eyes look like I have smoked a pound of gunja and hurt like hell.

Been still going out intermittently but I'm cautious about spreading to others so mostly have stayed in.

Anyone got and experiences with how long it lasted ? Supposed to last a week - 3 weeks.

On the ground in Pattaya? Arriving Soon? Have LINE installed on your phone?

Q 1 - Have you been to a Doctor/Hospital or are you self medicating and if so with what?

I had it a few years back, on my return from patts, I woke the next  day with stinging eyes, I went  to a pharmacy got some medicated eye drops, these did absolutely nothing. After few days I went to see my GP, who sent me straight to the eye casualty unit at my local hospital. I could barely see , after taking swabs, I was prescribed anti biotic eye drops, can't remember the name, I had these for about a month before it completely cleared up, I feel for you mate, not very pleasant,

Best to also use eye ointment eg. Optivis.

If you're only using Amoxycillin etc you may need something else - may be an STD.

Adenovirus  hmmm.

I'll get shot down I know but if it's bad enough and not responding to the eye drops I'd self medicate, with Amoxy at least and maybe Zithro'.

I appreciate the advice. But I'm confident the doctors are accurate. I self medicated with antibiotics and no improvement which further confirms viral.

It's usually self limiting , takes a good 10 days to two weeks to "flush out", be careful about washing your eyes with tap water as it can dry the eyes and make them more painful. Chloramphenicol drops (normally for bacterial conjunctivitis) will help as will gentle warm towel application to help clean. Hygiene is key for early healing and you need to exercise caution as it may be . transmittable. Avoid rubbing your eyes also.

IF YOU STAND FOR NOTHING, YOU WILL FALL FOR ANYTHING

Mine was caused by one of the flu viruses you need to take care because it can cause pitting/scares on your eyes, rest and take care of hygiene you may need antibiotics for secondary infections, let the doctors check you out regularly,if you wear glasses you will need your eyes checked after I went from +1.5 to +4 in two weeks.REST AND STAY OUT OF BARS AND KEEP YOUR

Had it twice. First time caught it from an off/on Girl I used to see.

She had just come back from visiting family for two weeks and had caught it from her baby nephew.

I met her for a drink the night she got back. I don't think we even touched, but next morning I had itchy and bloodshot eyes.

Got some drops the chemist and I was OK after ten days or so.

The second time was a lot worse. It started off just been irritating but turned into real pain real quick.

Kept putting off going to the quacks thinking the drops would sort it out.

After two days off no sleep I dragged my sorry arse to pattaya international hospital.

Ophthalmic doc said he thought I might have an abcess on the rear of my eyeball and if it touched my optic nerve I would lose th sight in my eye. He recommended a CT scan and if positive he would operate that afternoon.

Luckily the scan was negative and the diagnosis was a serious eye infection. (No shit Sherlock!!)

He also told me the infection had caused a build up of skin cells on the inside of my eyelids which needed to be removed.

Despite being full of Tramodol and a nurse pouring novacaine in my eye, this was agony.

Total bill for hospital 30K baht ( Kerching!!)

If I ever get it again I will immediately start taking antibiotics. I really don't want to go through it again.

  • 2 months later...

For quick relief, get apple cider vinegar and put a few drops in warm water.  Put a few drops in the effected eye.  Then using a clean cloth or make up wipe, clean around the other eye.

Thanks one trick, the other while painful briefly tends to work within a few seconds to mins is put a few drops of lemon juice in the affected eye.   Hurts like hell for a few secs, but the effects are like magic.
