A member of a well-placed Thai family here theorized for me the strategy for dismantling the cycle of corrupt oligarchs taking their turns at pillaging the nation.

It follows the old Chinese "kill the chicken, scare the monkey" proverb.

The Thai courts can gut the fortune of the Shinawatra clan for their part in pillaging the country's wealth. This is all very legal and in full conformance with the rule of law.

Alternatively, Yingluck may keep as much of her fortune as she can hide offshore, and then depart Thailand .. a fugitive, perhaps never to return, as her brother. There is a long tradition here of passively allowing political indictees to leave Thailand before their convictions.

Thaksin is a pretty good case study.

Meanwhile, the many uber wealthy Thai families, controlling vast commercial empires here, who were a part of the Shinawatra cabal are watching this and deciding if they really want any piece of this.

Without their money to fund it, the game is over.

It will be instructive to watch if during trial Yingluck is called to go overseas to attend to some contrived event, and moves into Thaksin's spare bedroom.

I doubt there is an Aung San Suu Kyi, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, or Dr. Martin Luther King in that bunch.

No vendetta .. by merely enforcing the existing rule of law, a fresh start for Thai politics is then possible.
