Do other Nationals stampede during religious festivals?

I have been waiting for this one to come up, so let the flaming begin....

Apologies for asking, maybe a sideline question, but being non religious can someone please explain to me why the people are actually stampeding?  Is there a start time for whatever happens at Mecca that is set in stone and must not be missed, and if so what is it?

RIP to the dead .... Hope they will learn a lesson after their disgraceful crowd safely method .

Nothing Foreign about the Deaths.

Assuming they are all Muslims.

This one occurred due to what appears to be poor crowd management by the authorities. Sources other than the Saudi government say that two large crowds travelling in different directions intersected each other at an intersection. One of the crowds were police and Army personnel escorting some prince. Of course the Saudis are saying different.
