Recommend checking out youtube videos by Stuart Jay Raj...he is a so called polyglot and can speak many languages fluently. His videos on Thai are quite enlightening. He explains the reasons for things....a lot of references to Sankrit as the language of Thai origin. I attached one of his videos that I edited down to the key part. This is just a teaser go onto youtube...oh and he has a site you can pay money for courses.

Tones are the easy part of Thai. As English speakers we use them everyday with out knowing it, they are part of expression or emotion. A little bit of practicing speaking with a Thai and you will pick them up
